go in this thread....

cant get there under my own steam, need to convince my dad to drive to suitable viewing spot. The maximum extent of the coverage is about 99% in the outer hebrides, were not getting a total eclipse so >80% will be more than impressive enough for viewing / photographing.

I live in the midlands, so a good view could be had from here, but the met office are suggesting that the further you travel down the s/w penninsula or into s/w wales, the greater the chance of clear skies. Does anyone have any plans for viewing this spectacle and if so do you have any opinions on the local weather forcasts or the Mercian microclimates in general?

Although i could be in or around somerset for 09.30 and would leave soon after (this is the time of maximum coverage) im anxious ill get stuck on the M5 if everyone gets the same idea, and i have to be back in Wolverhampton for 4 else ill miss my methadone

if anyone has any interest in this event please leave live weather info/traffic works info/personal plans, astronomical knowledge, and general tips...

BELOW THIS POST

ill lurk on the met offices website and contribute if I can

If this were happening in a month's time, then I'd probably be making my way to one of the westernmost points of northern Europe, purely by coincidence.

As it is, I'm in the 90% zone anyhow, but I'll be staring at a bloody monitor in all likelihood.

Apparently it doesnt matter too much where in the UK you are. The worst case is about 85% and the best case is 98%. Therefore it doesn't really seem worth the effort for an extra 10% eclipse. I saw the 1999 total eclipse and tbh it was a bit of an anticlimax. The sky went an eerie colour for 20 minutes or so then that was it. Other than being able to say 'I was there', its not worth the fuckin effort (and expense).

I wouldn't be in the UK though, would I? And I'd be there for other reasons anyway.

You're right though - there's not much point in chasing it for the eclipse's sake alone, unless that's really your thing.

I already went to plymouth for the 99 eclipse only to get clouded out - i managed to get a hotel in gloucester the night previous in order to get the last non reservable and available train heading for the south west from glous. t. station at 04.15 in the morning.

The weather got more overcast as the sun rose - and all of a sudden an anouncement comes over the PA - the train was no longer going to plymouth but instead was to be diverted to torquay, which i wasnt sure was within the line of totality. Any passengers wishing to go to plymouth had to change trains. decisions decisions. Unsure as to whther or not torquay was getting a total eclipse - i joined the mad dash across to the plymouth train, witnessing the pitch black of the clouded over (but still spectacular) total eclipse with 249,999 other heads on plymouth hoe.

If i had stayed on the original train and gone to torquay, i would have still been within the line of totality, and one of the only places in the UK where the clouds parted long enough to see the moon and the corona.

Tell them you're going on holiday. They'll give you your methadone. I did when was on dailys n had to go long days to uni.

This just isnt going to happen. They require at least 6 months after you make the request to organise it, see proof of travel documents, time to notify the local police etc

If id had thought about it sooner instead of sulking i could have arranged it with the chemist, they're pretty cool like that, but they're not open now untill thursday (when i would have to take away fridays dose) and it would be rude and presumptive to ask with no warning. Gear is definitely not an option as a; i have no money b; its unnecessary to bring drugs like that onto a heavily policed motorway and c; i want to see the eclipse and for once in my pathetic life, not just nod out

@stee if you've been on the juice long enough missing a day wont cause much agro - unless you let your head mess with you.

Really? They were fine with me. Just were given the extra for the days i wouldn't be there.

Looking forward to this, it coincides with taking the kids to school, so upside family event, downside, can't get too out of it.

Watched the last one at Burrow on the hill (Iron age hill fort) and while it wasn't as mind blowing as I expected, I still enjoyed it.

Not me, I wouldn't like to drop my acid during the eclipse, I'll just have a terrible time fumbling to pick it up off the ground again in the darkness.

:P

listening to dsotm in full during a solar eclipse on LSD....once in a lifetime.

There speaks a man for whom the sky didn't part in 1999. But at least you speak from experience, as opposed to some other dicks (dick?) in this thread.

Eclipse, Cornwall, 1999, greatest day of my life. Will have the pics on my wall until the day I die. Clouds parted miraculously at the last minute. Imma guess you were 4 miles away at the "festival" and didn't get the parting cloud. Most amazing experience of my life, helped by the following MDMA and farmers impromptu party in his (rented) field. Told the full story here a couple of times before, bolloxed if I can be bothered again. You were either there or you were 6. Enjoy your office jobs.

That sounds so perfect, man. Nearly brings a tear to my eye :)

I'm in the 95% zone but it's forecast to be rather cloudy :\

I'm still going to wake up in time to see whatever I can see though :)

Haha! I'm sure I would have enjoyed it more if I'd been at a festival off me tits mate, unfortunately I was at work in Cheshire so we all just went outside for the duration then that was it, game over.. There were no clouds were I was so we had a good clear view and I'm glad I saw it, but I'm also glad I didn't go to any great effort or expense.
