I've been on the suboxone program for five years now. I wouldn't say I'm addicted to it but I am on only taking 2 mg per day and my doctor says I might for the rest of my life now. Sometimes that's depressing but also comforting knowing I'll be less likely to relapse.

i think maintenance drugs are a perfectly acceptable lifestyle choice, other than being a treatment to an underlying illness. congratulations on staying away from relapse for 5 years.

i think the word treatment here is key. often when people are dependent on a certain treatment to either survive, or at the very bare minimum maintain a good quality of life, they feel helpless which could bring about an aura of depression.

it's all about how you look at it.

Well said baooozs.A lot of wisdom there.Treatment/maintainance is definitely preferable to being strung out. There's no shame in improving your quality of life.

This no need for you to be on it for the rest of your life. If your in america, then kinda convenient for the doctor to have a steady stream of income from you for life.

So if you descide you want to break free of the subs.. you certanly can do this. You can use a taper and the switch to a short acting antagonist for two weeks, followed by none opiate medications that often make the acutes pretty bearable.

The acutes will be followed by Some months of paws which can be lessened and shortened by makinh lifstyle and thought changes.

Subs are a great thing to allow people to stabalize and get there lives running in the right direction. But the certanly are not a benign medication.

You can certainlty get off them if you desire.

If you do decide to ever get off, I'd suggest you go as low as possible slowly. When I got off I believe I was taking .25 milligrams or something like that and it wasn't that bad. I did relapse, but it wasn't because of the Suboxone. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with lifetime maintenance if that works for you. I was on Sub for like a year and a half I believe.

I do have to say, I had to be a bit forceful with my Doctor about it. He said something like "you are one of the first of my patients to actually get off of Suboxone" :\
