I developed an intolerance or sensitivity after being on venlafaxine (Effexor) to a number of substances including gluten, soy, casein, egg, red meat, spinach and broccoli. If anyone else has had a similar issue did the intolerance go away after ceasing the Effexor? I sincerely hope I am not stuck like this for life.

That's an awfully large variety of nutritionally diverse foods (usually people don't develop physical sensitivity to half a dozen things at once, especially not stuff like spinach!), are you sure it's not psychogenic anxiety of some sort? Or perhaps related to appetite suppression/changes in gut motility due to the Effexor, maybe?

What are the symptoms of your sensitivity?

I doubt it is psychogenic as some of the intolerances developed after I quit some of the foods I worked out were bad for me. I had an omelette after I cut out the soy and gluten and had brain fog and an extremely cold feeling emotionally. Also I could barely walk. Prior to that I could eat eggs without any symptoms.

Most the symptoms are neurological - I don't get any stomach pain or nausea. Mostly brain fog, numbness in the body, dead emotions, no motivation, no sensation, anger, a sense of impending death or doom. Probably a few other things too.

That actually sounds like pretty typical signs that Effexor is not the right drug for you or that your dosage is too high - I have heard of people experiencing similar symptoms unrelated to food when they are on SNRI drugs that aren't right for their body chemistry. Maybe it's also related to changes in blood sugar?

Have you talked to a doctor or whoever prescribed you about this?

I have mentioned the food sensitivities to my doctor but they did not offer any explaination or solution to the problem. Interesting you mention the blood sugar, I might get myself checked for diabetes. I am not sure why red meat or eggs would affect me so much since they have no substantial carbohydrates. These were two of the worst food reactions I had.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

after years of eating duck eggs I developed a major reaction last year now I swap my duck eggs for chicken eggs works out great for me. as sekio said maybe the difference in blood sugar or chemical reaction with certain foods could be reacting with the meds. I read on here something about grapefruit reacting with medication so maybe it is something similar ask your doctor or get in touch with the company that make them and see if there are any other people who have had the same experience not all side effects are mentioned on the backs of labels.
