Hey everyone :)

So I've had folliculitis (confirmed by 3 doctors) on my inner thighs and bikini area for about 4 months now. I've tried antibiotics (doxycycline and cipro) and even antifungals (diflucan) but nothing has cleared it up. I have even washed with hibiclens wash and avoided shaving the areas where it is. Today, a new folliculitis spot (which will eventually turn into more than it is, I'm sure, popped up on the back of my thigh. I'm getting pretty frustrated.

Has anyone has folliculitis that has been resistant to treatment? How long did it take to clear up? Did anything help you to clear it up?

Have had some issues with either washing detergents or fabric softeners in the past - no idea if this could apply. Have kept to only "free and clear" detergent and no softener since then. Dryer sheets could even be a consideration.

Thank you :)

I recently did change laundry detergents and dryer sheets after I moved into my apartment in August...so that may explain it. I have very sensitive skin, and my mother was using the same detergent/dryer sheets for years....since I was a baby lol so for 23 years. That may explain some things.

Cool, hope it will help to clear up soon!

Messed up one time and let my grandma wash some clothes. Was broken out for a few days, and I now make sure to take plenty of spares if staying over!

is this the same thing as an ingrown hair? i've had something similar but i don't know if it was related to ingrown hairs or not? the doctor would eventually have to perform a small type of surgery on the area and drain the abscess and once it was tested for MRSA. i'm not sure if this is the same thing. but, same area.

and i have an ingrown hair there atm which i have no idea how to treat :/

Go to the drug store and buy: Nizoril shampoo with Ketoconazole, jock itch cream with terbinafine (Lamasil), and jock itch spray with Miconazole - basically every topical antifungal medication you can find. This is important - Folliculitis will rebound on you if you don't vary the treatment. Alternate the OTC anti-fungals, but if at all possible, once a month go to a tanning bed and bake the area. Kill it off. And this is weird, but it works - get some emu oil, blend with a bit of lanolin and use that, too.

Of course, you must NEVER pick at it. they aren't zits and you can't pop them. well, you can, but it it's very bad. you have a superficial fungal infection, when you mess with it, you push it deeper into your skin. DON'T.

^ Thanks tantric.

I'm a very clean person. Can it really be transmitted just by shaving like the docs say? If not how could I have even gotten it?

Have you tried Tendskin? I used to suffer from it when shaving now it's a thing of the past. May get a minor outbreak every now and then but by and large it's gone.

I suggest you apply povidone-iodine 3-5 times a day.

Do you have any other medical problem ?

Awesome. I will look at that!

Thanks! No other medical probe sides anxiety, depression etc. I just started Prazosin but I doubt it's from that especially since it's localized.

Well, I'm an herbalist so I don't really do OTC creams and what not, I just make my own medicine. Oregon grape, goldenseal, barberry, or anything from the berberine family will kill whatever is causing it, assuming it's bacterial. You'll want to find them in salve form, which is admittedly hard to come by in some areas, but you could even dab tincture on with a cotton ball. (Tincture is easier to find.)

I've treated four topical MRSA cases in my practice using the berberine family, and there's already evidence for it in the scientific literature.

Watch your diet too... avoid overly sweet or salty food. Sweet feeds the bacteria and salty hinders fluid clearance.

Awesome foreigner. Thanks for that. I prefer the natural route also. It's being quite stubborn so I'm going to look for that.

The fungus is everywhere - that's not what caused it. Something about your body did. I forgot this point - get your bloodsugar checked. If you are pre-diabetic, the fungus will thrive off the extra sugar. Here's my natural mixture: emu oil, tea tree oil, lanolin, peppermint oil, lavender oil. The first two are the main ones, then heat that up in the microwave and add a dab of lanolin (it's goo) - it will dissolve. The other two are just to make it palatable. I think iodine would work, too, but your #1 thing is the tanning bed - fungi HATE sunlight. Doing 10 min will make a bit part of it go away almost at once, but you CANNOT leave it at that - you must medicate for weeks after your last bump to be sure its gone.
