I see 40 to 50mg/kg of pentobarbital, along with an opioid as being an effective dose for euthanasia. That's not terrible. That's what, 2.5 to 5 grams? That's hardly bad at all.
I don't see any reason why more potency is needed. I mean, if the bitter taste is too much a problem, there are other routes of administration.
Barbiturates may be effective drugs for euthanasia, but when it's time for me to go, I'll be choosing an opiate, a benzodiazepine and an antihistamine (the first two to ensure lethality and the antihistamine to relieve the unpleasant physical effects of the overdosed opiate).
