Florida welfare recipients must pass drug test

All Florida law enforcement, state workers, and politicians should have to submit to drug tests just as often as the welfare recipients do. 'We' pay for welfare with taxes same as we pay 'their' salaries, I see no difference. To NOT do so is setting the precedent that it is OK to do drugs if you can pay for them yourself. If these swine truly believe in this policy, they should have to unzip n piss in the cup with the rest of them.

*edit* ok, I'll admit it, I'm an idiot lol I didn't read the article. Law enforcement and state workers need to take a drug test when they APPLY too... did I miss something about regular screenings? Shit anyone can pass ONE test... I mean it's hard for the pot folk, which is super bullshit.. but florida is loaded to the tits with coke crack and meth, those are the problem drugs and those only take a few days off to test clean for =\

Politicians though... does a governor or mayor or congressman need to pass a drug test when they get elected? How about DA's, judges? I doubt it. They should have to now, if anything as a sign of good faith to the people (As if they shouldn't have been getting tested anyway. Hell, anytime a DA or judge puts someone away on drug charges they should be required to have passed a drug test that month or something)

Only 2 Percent of Florida Welfare Applicants Have Failed Their Drug Tests

A controversial new law requiring all people in Florida to undergo a drug test before receiving welfare benefits from the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program was championed heavily by Gov. Rick Scott. He claimed the new law would save Florida money, but new statistics show that only 2 percent of applicants who have undergone testing since the law went into affect July 1 have failed their tests. Which means the law could either cost the state or at least save it very little money.

compare the 2% that failed their drug tests to the >8% of Floridians that take drugs.

ACLU, Navy vet sue over welfare drug testing law

TALLAHASSEE -- The ACLU of Florida and a Navy veteran from Orlando have filed a class action lawsuit against the state challenging a new law that requires cash welfare recipients to first pass a drug test.

The lawsuit contends that the drug testing requirement represents an unconstitutional search and seizure.

The suit was filed in federal court in the Middle District of Florida on Tuesday on behalf of Luis Lebron, a Navy veteran and University of Central Florida student who receives welfare while caring for his son and disabled mother.

“I served my country, I’m in school finishing my education and trying to take care of my son,” Lebron, 35, said in a release. “It’s insulting and degrading that people think I’m using drugs just because I need a little help to take care of my family while I finish up my education.”
