Disorganization, bureaucratic infighting and an inability to force drug makers to conduct needed safety tests have undercut efforts at the Food and Drug Administration to uncover drug dangers, U.S. government auditors said in a report being released Monday.

When drug safety specialists raise alarms about certain medicines, they sometimes feel that their recommendations fall "into a 'black hole' or 'abyss'" at the agency, according to the report by the Government Accountability Office.

Agency officials sometimes excluded drug safety specialists from presenting findings at public hearings, and tensions between officials who approve drugs and those who ensure that they are safe are common, the report said.

The agency "lacks clear and effective processes for making decisions about, and providing management oversight," of issues involving the safety of popular medicines, the report stated.

The agency told the accountability office that its conclusions were "reasonable," the report said.

Last year, the agency created a drug safety oversight board and asked the Institute of Medicine to examine its drug safety practices. The institute's report is due in July.

The accountability office said the agency's responses so far might help, "but will not address all gaps."

Susan Bro, a spokeswoman for the Food and Drug administration, said it welcomed the accountability agency's audit and was "currently leading a comprehensive and timely effort to transform the methods our medical and scientific staff use to manage safety issues."

The report comes after a series of withdrawals of drugs from the market led critics of the agency and some in Congress to suggest that the agency was failing in its mission to protect the public from dangerous drugs.

When it approves new drugs for sale, the drug agency often requires manufacturers to study whether the medicines are working as intended and whether they have unwanted side effects once they get into a broader market.

But the agency announced in March that two-thirds of these promised studies had not been started. Hundreds of trials have been pending for years.

i'm sure. 8(

I wonder if there are any news articles out there mentioning payoffs and flawed studies....

Yet they have the time to release anti-marijuana statements based on little or no research. Great job, US government. Keep up the half-assed work.

^Trust me, the US govt works very hard to make money and preserve power. Their goals simply are not the same as ours. There is no reason to believe that our government is any different from any government in history. 99% of politicians are out for power, and that will never change. Even America will be a totalitarian state as soon as all of our checks and balances are eroded.

Haha this post reminds me of chris farley on snl talking about how he was "socially unacceptable" and "doesent shower enough in the week" and he always did the quotes with his fingers.

in order to pass something off as an approved medication, doesnt it have to meet the side effect regulations...such as Headache, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, seizure, dry mouth..........1 out of six...sorry...NOT A MEDICINE.

I've always suspected the FDA as being one of the most corrupt government organizations. What in the world would be stopping them from taking bribes from big greedy food conglomerates who want to use unsafe / untested new food additives, and pharmaceutical companies who'll let no one tell them their cash cow of a drug is "dangerous"? There's big, big money involved in both, an enormous market, and a government that's more concerned with a business' right to protect their trade secrets and keep their competitive edge than their duty to be accountable to their customers.

Plus, no human being is unbiased when it comes to food or drugs. Everyone has a weakness for the way a certain taste tickles their tongue or a cetain pill soothes their troubles. I'm sure the companies are quite adept at using this to their advantage when choosing which FDA representitives to wine and dine.

Amen Brother.

And quit bitching about meds; what about our food and water?
If you've ever been to a third world country and seen real grinding starve to death poverty, the colorful and calm isles of the grocery store almost look evil. ANd if you think about it, it is. Most of the food on the shelves is so full of shit to preserve and homogonize it, that there is no nutritional value left to it.

When did we start eating for reasons other than nutrition? It may be why we're all going to be dependant on so many drugs to keep us alive in the near future.
