So last night was my first time trying methadone, I have to say as far as a buzz goes it didnt live up to expectations. I started with a dose of 7.5mg, now I do have an opiate tolerance, I am 6ft 150lbs approx. And am currently down to 90mg a day of oxy, couple weeks ago was about 150-180 mg/day with some days going into the 250 range. So i started with 7.5, three hours later went up to 12.5, finally 2 hours later at about 11:30 last night went up to 17.5 total approx. The high I didn't really feel, I slept like a baby and had no pain what so ever, which was nice to have for once. Today I have 20mg left, after taking 17.5mg last night over 5-6 hours and not feeling much what would be an ok dose for today, I dont know a ton about the stuff but would like to get something out of these, is that possible? If not at least its an effective pain reliever even at low mg for me. Just wondering because I know it has a long half life.

Also, I am happy because I am not feeling the WD from having no oxy for over 24 hours. So that's another plus. I'm looking for a safe dose after taking 17.5mg from 16-20 hours ago.

Hi Mcrt24,

I will give you a direct answer: wait to be in the beginning of opiate withdrawal before taking some methadone again. Methadone is a strong opiate and you can very easily overdose on it.

If you take your methadone now, and whatever the dose, you run the risk of overdosing and dying, because of its very long half-life. You took your last methadone dose 16-20 hours ago, and the half-life of methadone is 15 to 60 hours, which means that after 60 hours, half of your methadone dose is still present in your blood.

As you have a tolerance to opiates, it may be less risky, but you're used to a certain opiate (oxycodone or oxymorphone), which has a much shorter half life. With methadone, you have taken a drug that your body isn't used to, be very careful ;)
