Psychiatrists in Switzerland have nearly completed their study of LSD-assisted psychotherapy in the treatment of anxiety associated with life threatening illnesses.

The study is the first of its kind to be undertaken in 35 years. Although most people associate the psychedelic drug LSD with the hippie counterculture of the 1960's, psychiatrists had been studying the use of LSD as an aid to psychological therapy before it was federally banned in the United States in 1968.

Peter Gasser, M.D., a psychiatrist and lead investigator of the study, said in a letter (PDF) to friends and colleagues that "all the 12 participants reported a benefit from the treatment." The study was begun in 2007 after being approved by Swiss legal authorities and the final LSD-assisted psychotherapy session was completed on May 26.

"I am proud to say that we had in 30 sessions (22 with full dose 200 μg LSD and 8 with placebo dose 20 μg LSD) no severe side effects such as psychotic experiences or suicidal crisis or flashbacks or severe anxieties (bad trips)," Gasser wrote in his letter. "That means that we can show that LSD treatment can be safe when it is done in a carefully controlled clinical setting."

Participants reactions to the LSD-assisted psychotherapy ranged from feeling that they were more aware of what was important and meaningful in life to being more relaxed toward everything that happened to them.

I read this doctors report on LSD treatment( in the 60`s). Kids with severe autism and other mental illnesses were much relieved. Many of them could not even speak before the treatment, and after that they started to socialize etc. Not saying its cool to do this to kids unless they have some really serious mental problems. 1 of the subjects who never had spoke before started socializing etc. and referred to the LSD treatment as "talking to god"(wich maybe aint a good thing). Dno what i wanted to say with this post but u can check it out if u search a lil bit. I think the doses were much higer then 200micrograms tho.

I wonder what the "carefully controlled clinical setting" was like.
calm and peaceful, and for the subjects' mindset, there was education and support and mutual trust.

200 is a pretty high dose, especially when blotters can be pretty diluted. iirc, the average dose on a blotter is around 50-120 micrograms.

Yeah, 200 is nothing to laugh at really, especially if most of these people were never exposed to psychedelics previously. It's a good number given the gravity of the context of this study, end-of-life situations. A powerful dose to facilitate reflection.

That would really suck to be the group that got the placebo,

"Hey wait! You scientists ripped me off!"

why don't other countries like this just say "fuck you to the USA and their retarded war on drugs" and just legalize everything to show that it wouldn't damage shit and actually make that countries society basically a Utopian society. everyone in the world needs to stop being so afraid of "drugs" and just legalize them totally.

because other countries were coerced by the USA going back to the Shanghai Conference of I think 1908 to sign international treatise banning or severly restricting mind altering drugs and are thus bound by the succesion of international agreements since. Switzerland might not be party to international agreements governing narcotics- they have the sense to stay out of foreign entaglements, alliances, and treaties that compromise their national soveiregnty and neutrality.

The way the USA was once upon a time a long time ago.
