I worked at a grocery store for a long fucking time, probably around 6 years. They had multiple store manager changes while I was there and with the final boss I had an altercation and ended up quitting and getting a "Do not rehire." Now even though this manager probably hates me now, I feel that I have to use this job as a reference.

The only thing that I have in my favor is that both the Dairy Manager and Grocery Manager absolutely loved me and offered me their phone numbers, address, and told me that they would be happy to give me an excellent reference. When I fill out job applications do you think that it is possible to bypass the manager who hated me and instead give them the information of the managers who actually respected and liked me?

I have been stressing out about this so much over the past couple of weeks and desperately need a job (my mom has to take a leave from work to have a mass removed from her chest) but I am terrified about what I can do in this situation. I started putting my Dairy Manager (the one who really liked me) down as my supervisor, do you think that this will work?

Thanks in advance for any help, I'm also kicking a year long poppy tea habit at the same time and that has not been helping my anxiety over the situation.

Of course. People call the references you give them. Make sure you give them direct numbers to the people you want them to speak to.

It's bad etiquette for an employer to seek out people who don't like you, in an effort to eliminate you from the hiring pool. Nobody is perfect. If you dig enough, I'm sure you can find someone who is willing to talk shit about anyone.

I am the general manager of a pretty good sized produce distribution company. when I hire a new employee, I call their references and ask to speak to their supervisor. On our application, it asks, the name of the employer (company name) and the name of the applicant's direct supervisor. thats who I want to talk to. I'm not interested in talking to upper mangement. I want the person that the applicant reports to everyday.

*breathes a sigh of relief* Thanks for the response guys, you have both helped immensely to put my fears to rest. It's scary enough being suddenly ousted into the current fierce job market, even more scary when you were an poppy tea addict and weed lover and suddenly are forced to acknowledge the fact that EVERY place in my area drug tests and I had better clean if I want to stand even a chance of getting in somewhere.

I'm thankful then that I had excellent relationships with both of the managers of the department I worked for. This is probably a blessing in disguise, I can probably make better money somewhere else anyway.

YES! It definitely is! I got fired from my dream job about 4 years ago, for reasons I still don't know. I was so hurt and traumatised about being fired from a job that I loved so much that I couldn't bring myself to contact them and ask why I was laid off...

Anyway, it was such a blessing in disguise. I've come a long way since then and I'm now earning enough money to pay off our mortgage <3

Good luck man :)

Hey, people get sacked for fights all the time. In fact, if my memory serves me correctly, not getting along with boss is the top reason.

If it comes up during an interview, be honest without volunteering anything. You were there six years, so you're obviously not some irresponsible dropkick.

That said, if you do have trouble finding a job, don't fret too much. Don't get yourself into a state. They will hire based on you staying on for six years (= loyalty), the two good references, what they see in front of them during the interview, what their business needs are, and what their own prejudices are. You can control the first three, but not the last two. Get my drift?

It was because you're just too damn cute for your own good.

yeah i had a huge falling out with my last employer, whom i worked part time and a bit full time summers, and before that interning, for like 5 years. the business was very small, just the boss and about 3-5 employees.

so yeah, all these fucking resumes i put out this past year i'm pretty sure he shit-listed me; whatever though, i'm going back to school lol.
