Hi!
I'm a 19 year old guy who is rapidly losing his hair due to male pattern baldness. I want to start taking finasteride to halt the hair loss as it is well know that at my stage it can pretty much stop it. But what boggles my mind is it safe to take it at such an age?
Finasteride stops some T->DHT conversion so one has less DHT circulating around.
As far as I know, DHT is the thing that's responsible for development of secondary sexual characteristics.

Can anyone shed some light on this one? Thanks

if your hair is going at this age just shave your head mate seriously and resign yourself to it, embrace it don't fight it. Like you say finasteride messes with your hormones DHT in particular and, what are you going to take it for life, not worth it, also heard depression side effects from it etc

Yeah was about to say the same, honestly if your 19 and losing hair i dont think getting on a med for the remainder of your life is a good idea

Side effects occur in 2% of cases and for 90% of patients their hair was better after 10years of treatment than at baseline.
It's very inexpensive. Provided you get generic or proscar.
I still technically have a full head of hair but if I wet my hair you can see the recession..

My concern is not sides or costs etc, but my young age and the effects of DHT inhibition at 19.

Instead of saying not to do it, can someone provide an answer to the OP's original question...? I want to know more about Finasteride too, and doctor's haven't been useful, labelling it as 'synthetic testosterone' which is a load of BS. But anyways, any personal experiences or science?

if that is your main question then I would recommend mods that you swing this over to steroid discussion because they are more knowledgable about hormones and side effects of hormonal drugs because thats all what steroids are about. Some of them use finasteride for the purpose of halting steroid induced hair loss because increased Testosterone (ie common steroid) causes increased DHT as it is converted into it, and they both play a role in androgen expression etc, so ye see what they say in there imo :)

I would suggest registering on a site like steroid.com and asking your question there. I could read into this and try to give you an educated answer, but it is a very common drug users of certain androgenic steroids. They will also pass no judgement on you for your desire to keep your hair at such a young age. I am actually extremely surprised your doctor was so disinclined to prescribe this since it IS a medical issue.

I also think it's understandable you'd be concerned at your age. I am 30 and am currently losing hair due to medication I have to take, but I can live with that. I would've been devastated at 19!!

Ideally, go see an andrologist who speciales on this and other problems that come with malehood and disturbancies of androgenic hormones.

Good luck Kojak!

DHT and T are both responsible for secondary sexual characteristics. When you stop that conversion, more T is aromatised into estrogen (in theory) so you may develop gyno.
I don't think you'll get any serious issue from finasteride, but if you do, just stop the drug and you should return to normal.

Thanks guys!! Very helpful answers.

Okay I see, gyno. I know about that, yea. I'm veeeryy informed on the sides topic. Finasteride is safe.
But is it possible finasteride will interfere with the development of aforementioned secondary sexual charachteristics, or I'm done by 19?

You should be done by this age, but it depends on the individual. Worst case scenario, it'll just slow down your development.

DHT is very important for mental/sexual well being IMO. I would just embrace it, personally speaking.

Unless he wants to start supplementing with IM DHT as well, once those levels are in the shitter. :/

Go skinhead. It doesn't look too bad on some people.

I just wish that were my case:

I don't think sexual and mental development stops until you're basically well into your 30s. At least 25. Me personally, normally I would not want to mess with any sort of steroid horomone modulation unless it was a life or death scenario. There's just too much to fuck up.

Propecia does seem to be well tolerated for its purpose, though. It won't give you gynecomastia. The worst I've heard is long-lasting sexual dysfunction, a rare side effect. If you're willing to gamble a little with your sex horomones it could indeed slow or reverse hair loss, and if that makes you feel any better, then you've accomplished something.

If embracing your baldness (wax it like a cue ball) is not your style, it's worth a shot.

The replies made me think.

Again, side effects are very rare. They are most of the time(lol) reversible.
Effectiveness of the drug is 100% proven.
It's VERY cheap.
Zero hassle, just pop in a pill every morning.

If I'm indeed done with puberty I don't see any reason not to take it. I'm gonna go for a bloodtest before starting it so I'm covered if stuff will go wrong(98% it won't).

And yes I was VERY devastated when I was 18 and a buzzcut revealed my thinning top of the head. But I hoped on minoxidil to which I responded greatly and then a mild topical side-effect free anti-androgen. Besides, they'll release a topical solution in 2018 which will be side-effect free and more effective than finesteride sooo 8)

ah the sureness and single mindedness of youth. Hope it does the trick without sides but don't be stubborn and stay on it if it isn't effective or has side effects that YOU notice not read about.
