Angela-A

One of the most stylish and cool movies I've ever seen. Brilliantly directed, superbly shot, scenic, sexy and such a cool story. Total fairytale too. Seek it out. :)

"La Cité des enfants perdus" aka "The City of Lost Children". Watch it with English subtitles. It's one of the best movies ever made in any language.

Yes Yes!!! I bought this a year ago for my girlfriend thinking she would like, but anyways, i just watched CoLC last week and loved it.
Lola- Fassbinder 1950 decadent Germany post war
Tin Drum- German
La Dolce Vita- Fellini
Nights of Cabiria - Fellini

check library for good obscure movies or google torrent finder and search>download

Not Foreing, but Tideland is good and even has junkie stuff. Daughter putting a wig a dead ole dad who OD as the flies swarm his cold body.

Goodbye Berlin!

It's basically about a son whose mom wakes up after a long coma. Before she fell in the coma she was in East Germany and was an adamant supporter of the Socialist state of East Germany. Anyway, the son feels like he needs to do everything in his power to make it so she doesn't know that East Germany has fallen and takes pretty crazy steps to hide this from her. It's pretty light-hearted and gives you a bit of insight what life was like in East Germany and also modern Germany. :)

I think it was Goodbye Lenin?

Woah, most of the movies I like are not in English. I enjoy them because each country has a different set of norms, paces, topics, etc.

I'm a Kusturica fan (here I go again talking about Kusturica in F&T) and I highly recommend Underground, Time of the Gypsies, and Black Cat White Cat. Seeing his movies changed the way I look at movies. The way he mixes magic and music into his movies is incredible. The feel is a bit different to get used to, but go about 30 minutes in a movie and you can't leave. It got me into Roma (gypsy) culture/music pretty heavy. I discovered him by random selection of a DVD to buy.

The Band's Visit is also one lighthearted one. It's about an Arab military band coming to Israel to perform, so you can guess what kind of treatment they expect. It tries not to go into the political side, and it's pretty funny.

The Lives of Others, another East-West German context thing. Gripping. Awesome movie.

And if you liked Chakde India (haha) you will like Om Shanti Om. It's pretty raucous and funny, about a wannabe Bollywood "junior" actor and some reincarnation.

Me too, I do like a lot of Hollywood films but it's good to see a wide range of films from different countries, each style is so different and unique.

"The Counterfeiter"

This is a German movie that takes place during WWII and is based on a true story - the work of the main character in real life was probably a large contributor to the Nazi's failure to prolong their reign, and he did it all from inside an extermination camp.

The main character is a genius counterfeiter whose bills are indistinguishable from real bills no matter the test, but unfortunately for him he happened to be Jewish during that time. Plenty of interesting stuff in this film, and it is impressive to see a German director taking on such a historically painful subject for the country to even talk about. The plot is great, and even if it wasn't based on a true story it would be interesting.

The 'foreign' movies that have moved me include:

Life Is Beautiful (Italian)

Amelie (French)

As It Is In Heaven (Swedish)

Black Balloon (Australian)

..................(Im Aussie so Im being sarcastic in including it as a 'foreign' movie but it's a great movie)

Just watched this and it is a great movie if that's your kinda thing.
It's an Austrian movie though not German. :)

Good call. Austrian, German... both cheerful people with entertaining accents when they're not speaking German. Easy to get confused between the two from a native English speaker's perspective!

I also enjoy many Hollywood films! But perhaps because they are the standard here and I have been watching them since I was a child, I am looking always for something different.

i second City of Lost Children, undoubtedly one ofthe greatest and trippyist (sp?) films of all time.

also, Salam Bombay, a really sad story about a street child in Bombay (obviously). one of the few movies that moved me to tears. hard to find in most video stores though.

Spanish Apartment - good movie, especially if you live/have lived in a sharehouse.

Malena - funny story that turns sad.
