x2, x-men 2, x-men united... whatever title you use

shawn ashmore won the MTV best new actor award for his role as iceman in this film

and i guess i am not even sure why. x2 was named in the let down films of the year thread and i dont completely agree with that but i dont feel it was a champion of film making excellence and i thought ashmore's role and portrayal of bobby drake/ice man was mediocore and barely visable on the radar
i think his dilemmia with family could have been done better

spoiler of sorts:

i did enjoy the pseudo-unhappy ending (which of course is just a cheap jumping off platform for x3) but i throughly enjoy movies where not everything turns out just peachy fucking keen alright.
good, jean died. she did something nobel and the blue freak couldnt save her. and two men are left heart broken. and she did not reappear. this makes me smile.
the best memory i have of the film is when magneto is going to (the illusion) cerebro which is being guarded by the soilders and he uses power to bring all of the gernade rings out of each of their vests and they all blow up, nice one

and for 2006 x3

The MTV awards aren't really about recognizing artistic excellence in the field of film. It's just a teenaged popularity contest.

I enjoyed both x-men movies, since I'm a big comic book geek. I hope they carry on with the Dark Phoenix storyline in the thrid film.

Ooh, i just re-watched X2 - and I do have to disagree with him winning that, but whatever..

i didnt read the comics, but any insight on why X2 is a letdown?

Loved X2, and thought it was far superior to the first one, which was more of a let-down to me. That said, X2 isn't high cinema by any means.

*Minor spoiler*

I have a FOAF "X-fan" who's deeply skeptical of their attempt to work in the Dark Phoenix saga into the series, as the storyline is very long and complex, involving aliens, among other things. I have to say, I partly agree; then again, I know like 1% of the Phoenix story arc.

oh gambit....
damn, i have ti admit i was an eighth grader with a nerdy friend so into xmen it rubbed off onto me... her fav was gambit and i think i might like to see that too

and like shawn OMG! hes like SOoOOOOooooooOOooOOOo cute!!! lets make him win!

I really liked X2! I found it just as good (at least from what I recall) as the first Xmen. That impressed me, because often sequels really suck.

I liked the characters, I liked the plot, and the special effects were good. I will definitely see it again.

Re:Dark Phoenix...okay, I am a comic geek from way back so bare with me here. I think they can make Dark Phoenix work for X3 but only by making her something totally different to what she is in the comics. In the comics, the Phoenix Force is a cosmic entity; it's been around pretty much as long as the universe itself, and part of Jean Grey's mutation is that she's linked to it in some way (this is a recent thing....originally it was drawn to her just because of her strength of passion and character). The point is though that in the comics, the Phoenix is so far above and beyond humanity it's not funny...the only thing that ever limited it was that in taking human form it made itself vulnerable to human foibles; it could be manipulated by anyone cunning enough, and human passions turned out to be too much for it to deal with in the end, which is where the whole "Dark Phoenix" thing comes from. It had human emotion without a human's lifetime of dealing with emotion and it drove the Phoenix nuts.

I suspect (and hope) that they'll make the Phoenix just a repressed part of Jean's personality in the movie continuity, because I think that's the easiest and the best way to make the movie-going public accept it as not being hokey...

I just watched X2 again last night. This movie really turned out to be the surprise hit last summer. It does not fall into the trap that other sequels do by trying to repeat tricks from the original, like the Matrix did. The contrasting visuals -- Xavier's school, the outdoor damn, and Magneto's jail cell -- keep the screen looking interesting. There are also plenty of wide shots, something that is not always prevelant in special effects-driven films. Also, the characters' storylines stay fresh with only a small amount of time rehashing the first film. And how cool was Magneto's escape from jail?! Thumbs up.

damn, i've still gotta see the first one. everyone says they're better than spiderman, which was watchable, so i really should get round to it.

i will hopefully report back soon :)
