^^i was hoping that the young husband would get killed first too! yeah, he definitely did step it up. now that his wife's gone, he can hook up with the younger sister he was checking out earlier;) anyone else notice that?

I thought also if she would have actually gotten raped that it would have crossed the line, I am glad they didn't go there.

The scene was disturbing enough as it was however...

[spoil]I do think she was raped by the second mutant, as there was a little bit before the scene cut to outside the van, in which he was unbuckling his pants. When the camera comes back to inside the van he's holding the baby...[/spoil]

I was watching the DVD version, and I think it said something about being uncut, so maybe that few seconds was not present in cinemas.

It was a pretty good horror movie, I liked it a lot. The rape scene was disturbing enough to leave my stomach unsettled as were a few scenes later on. Not many movies do that to me nowadays.

Also something interesting that I noted, as with the movie hostel, when the family were being killed or abused I felt enough empathy for the pain they were experiencing to be notably cringing. On the other hand I was laughing, cheering etc. when similar levels of pain were inflicted upon the mutants.

I never really liked the original and I HATE remakes,so I was blown away by how good this movie actually was! The characters were actually likeable(not a sterotype in sight)the actors were great and once the two main actors were killed, all bets were off as to ANYONE surviving to see the end.

"When i watched hills have eyes i felt like i went to a restaurant, ordered a grilled cheese, and instead i got two slices of bread, a couple pieces of cheese, and a packet of butter slapped onto my plate. why cant they try and MAKE something outta the movie, instead of just throwing a bunch of ingredients in without even bothering to stir it up. i dont think it took much skill or thought to create the movie. Step 1: take old movie plot. Step 2: make it less tame so todays audience will be interested enough to keep watching. step 3: take things that always get people upset and throw them into the plot , make sure you overdo it cuz if you use subtlety people wont be thrilled and chilled enough."

My thoughts exactly. I should preface this by saying that I find most recent horror movies to be contrived, predictable, and boring (like most recent movies in general), all though there are a few that I enjoyed (Hostel and the Descent are two that come to mind). But this movie was just poorly made, I thought. It seemed to me that not one iota of passion was present in the production of this mediocre remake. It just oozes an aura of not giving a fuck about making a good film and just trying to make some money. It's not a peice of art, its just a product (like most movies today, I think). Overall it wasn't horrible and I've seen much worse movies, and it was sort of interesting that it was partially based on some truth about the people mutating from radiation and what not (or so my friend told me when watching it), but overall I thought it was pretty much a waste of time.

This movie to me was the most realistic horror film i have seen in a long time. The actions of the cast was realistic, And the scenes were brutal and flinch worthy.

Hey man, if you find graphic depictions of women being violently raped while a infant child watches the whole thing totally cool and OK, good for you.

It's an infant. Get it right!!! :p

In other news, I saw this last night on DVD...it was okay...a bit boring tho lol. I like the opening credits very much. The ending left me feeling bland and unsatisfied.

The movie was extremely tame compared to a lot of the other exploitation flicks and gratuitous horror movies out there. Many of which where made decades ago (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I Spit On Your Grave). It's okay if some of the imigary was too intense for you, but it does not mean that anyone who accepts it as entertainment for entertainment's sake is "pretty fucked in the head". That is along the same argument that kids who play GTAIII are 75% more likely to go shoot a cop because the video game desensitized them to the point of being totaly removed from truth, reality and consequence, which is a massive cop-out. I can go watch a movie like that, or like Hostel or like Dawn of the Dead 04 and thouroughly enjoy them because I know that they are just movies. That's it. It's karo-blood, latex and grease paint. It's not real, and I am pretty sure that anyone who has worked in an ICU or dealt with someone who suffered a massive trauma like those potrayed in The Hills have Eyes would tell you that they actualy looked pretty darned fake (thank god for suspension of disbelief).

What about the horror/thriller flicks that won great critical acclaim? Silence of the Lambs? Jacobs Ladder? Am I fucked up because I thought it was cool that Lecter disemboweled a gaurd and strung him up as some sick sculpture before carving the face off another guard and wearing it like a mask to make his escape?

And if you want to talk about expoliting viewers emotions, let's talk about other big movies that did just that. Titanic, for instance, put too much stock in one dimensional, cliched stereotypical characters that were all too easy to identify as "the jealouse, schemeing boyfriend", the "poor little rich girl who really wanted to be normal" and the "uber-romantic, uber-sappy super transient with a heart of gold". These characters were there strictly to illicit reactions from the viewers. By the end of the movie you were supposed to be thinking "man I hate that Billy Zane. I hope he dies. And I sure hope that little Leo can float away to happiness with Big Kate."

Then we have a movie like "The Passion of the Christ". A movie that was made specificly to guilt trip you into going to chruch. Watching a universaly known and loved figure like Jesus being brutally tortured for two hours is just another way to exploit the viewers emotions. They might as well have put your grandmother or your favorite kitten on that cross.

As far as needing movies like that to get our thrills these days... again, do some research. You may be surprised to find that the horror/thriller genre is almost as old as cinema it's self. Rape, murder, sadistic torture... it's all there. Hell, the first motion picture ever made was Edison's version of Frankenstein. Go a few thousand years back and you have the Gladiators... REAL life and death situations with blood, gore and needless suffering abound, all for the sake of entertainment.

I think you need to stop blaming the movies and start focusing your disdain on human nature in general. If you didn't like the movie, fine, so be it, just don't keep such a self-rightous attitude about it, because I can pretty much assure you that your feelings are quite misdirected.

Besides, The Hills Have Eyes was downright tame compared to 75% of the stuff on the video store shelves. Still a good movie.

W0rd. Love this post!!

Im pretty sure he WAS supposed to be raping her. You dont have to take your pants off to get your dick out.

I was happy the baby didnt die and all although I thought it would have been a much more realistic and emotionally effective if something bad HAD happened to the baby. But you know they gotta have that hollywood ending I guess.. *sigh*

The Hills Have Eyes remake was one of the best movies this year and far better than the original

i caught part of the origninal part 2 on some channel a while ago. i'm looking forward to seeing it, although i must admit that i'll probably just wait until it's on cable (we all know about the curse of the sequels...)

I saw this on acid.
it was disturbing to the point where my psyche was almost violated.

^eh, its pretty much the same thing when ur sober, except you just pay more attention to how much it sucks.

i read an article about this sequel saying they wrote it to make a statement about the war in iraq. the movie is about a buch of members of the national guard who encounter the 'mutants' in the sandy terrain... and then have to defend themselves and kill the mutants. to anyone who has seen it... was this metaphor that obvious throughout the film? or were they just trying to make it seem 'deeper' in the article than it actually is?

There was nothing deep about pt 2... at all.

Really.

It was awful.

There were some "political" statements in the beginning of the movie, but it more for the benefit of establishing the gung-ho meathead characters from the pacifists... kind of like the relationship between the father and the son-in-law in part 1.

But seriously. Part 2 isn't even worth a rental. It's just plain bad.

Yeah, it sucks hard. It's not as bad as when you rent a low budget horror film, but the fact that it's in the theatre and you're paying top buck to see it will just anger you. I liked the first one, so it isn't like I'm snobby about horror films or anything. But it frustrates me to no end when I'm watching a movie and every decision that the characters make is effing retarded. And not retarded in a Friday the 13th way, cuz those movies don't take themselves seriously like this one attempts to do.

save your money and rent it when you need something mindless.

thanks for the warnings. i'll just catch it on cable for a good laugh.
