I just came back from seeing Silent Hill... Let me preface my review with the fact that I am a huge fan of the video games and had a lot of high hopes for the movie...
I just said I HAD high hopes, hinting that it didn't do the game justice... Well, in my opinion it brought the game very much to life. Finally I can say that a good video game has been made into a good movie. But I have a feeling some will disagree.
Why?
Well, the movie was slowly paced, a bit long (2 hours 11 minutes), and not it was not scary.
So why do I think Silent Hill succeeded? Good question. The movie captured the visual aspects of the game and the mystery behind the events that had made Silent Hill a ghost town. The acting was top notch, the story followed the game mostly and was intruiging because you wanted to know what the fuck was going on. The video game, for those who have played it, was slowly paced and thus it was no surprise to me that the movie was going to slowly build just like the game did. The game was scary but simply because you were running around aimlessly in the dark getting chased by creatures beyond description. The movie had GREAT creatures and the scene in which they were shown were merely disturbing rather than scary. You would sit there and think "what the fuck is that and what the fuck is going on!?" but were you scared of the visuals on the screen? No, and that might have pissed off some people but I thought it was fine. Disturbing versus the cheap scares that plaugue movies these days suffices for me. I thought the creatures just added to you wanting know what the hell was going on in Silent Hill.
The gore, when the gore got going was graphic. Skin being pulled off, bodies being ripped apart, bloody spraying everywhere.... gore was definitely present even if you had to wait halfway through the movie to see it. The movie, like I said was 2 hours and 11 minutes long... which wasn't LONG for me since I was interested and it kept me interested, BUT I'm sure shaving off some small scenes would have helped to keep people who's attention spans are shorter fused that mine.
So what about the end? Well the end of the movie is a mystery itself. It ends strangely and it adds more questions and definitely leaves it open for a sequel.
Like I said, I have a feeling that there will be a 50/50 feeling about this movie. Either you like it or don't. I appreciate it because it brought the game to life for me. No it didn't scare me but it intruiged me in it's mystery and disturbing visuals. I give it a thumbs up.
