I saw it last night. I've never seen the stage production, but I thought the show works very well on film. The story is pretty straightforward and the characters aren't particularly well developed, but the film's entertaining enough. And the performances were nice, though I wish the filmmakers had cast a stronger singer as the Phantom...Gerard Butler (I think that was his name) didn't do much for the role, except at the end. But the production elements are just fantastic...the sets, costumes, props, etc. It's a good movie. :)

The real question is does Jennifer Eillison (Foxy young blonde who's not known outside of the UK) get her tits out or have to wear some tight clothes? :p :D

the point of the phantom wasn't suppose to be a good singer.. because in the story the realty was that he wasn't a singer at all. He just grew up there in the opera house, so he wasn't suppose to have a strong character in his vocals.

Actually, that's a good point. The character is supposed to be a composer, and composers aren't known for having stellar singing voices. :D
However, the Phantom should know how to color his vocals in order to lend dramatic effect to the music. Butler's effort was pretty laughable, especially considering the score's style -- big and quasi-operatic. Then again, from what I've heard of the original recording with Michael Crawford, maybe there hasn't been a great role model for the role. :\
