from imdb:

Set in the New York club scene of the late 1980's thru the 1990's, a tale which chronicles the rise and fall of club-kid promoter Michael Alig, a party organizer, whose extravagant life was sent spiralling downward when he boasted on television that he had killed his friend, roommate, and drug dealer, Angel Melendez. Originally from Indiana, Alig moved to New York, and came to be an underground legend, known for his excessive drug use and outrageous behavior in the club world. At his peak, he had his own record label, and magazine, and hosted Disco 2000, one of the biggest club nights in New York in the '90s. He was doing a lot of drugs, and as his addiction got worse, his party themes became darker and more twisted. Alig's saga reached its tragic crescendo when he viciously murdered his drug dealer, Angel, by injecting him with Drano and throwing him in the East River. The power he wielded on the club scene made him feel untouchable, so he didn't hestitate to boast of the murder. The press thought it was a publicity stunt--until Angel's body washed ashore.

i just caught the movie on DVD last night.

i dont necessarily feel that you have to read Disco Bloodbath to understand the movie, but knowing a little bit about the phenomenom will definitely help.

when i was in high school, a really good friend of mine sort of idolized michael alig, but not in a drug addiction/murdering kind of way. just being different and finding an outlet to express his individualism, he had no problem doing things out of the norm. he would record anything on TV that had the "club kids" in it (day time talk shows, etc). so i didnt have a problem whatsoever understanding the movie. i DO want to check out the book, though. as well as Clubland snaz recommended.

(btw, a movie was release a little while back [maybe a year ago] titled "Clubland". does anyone know if its on the same premise?)

but i do agree, i watched the DVD with a friend of mine who wasnt familiar with the "club kids" and he found it difficult to understand. he didnt dislike to movie, but he didnt like the movie either.

i enjoyed watching the movie. i was impressed with the day time talk show scene and how similar it was with (i believe) the time they were on phil donahue. its been a long time, but i even recall some of the kids coming out in the same makeup and costumes.

seth green was definitely awesome. i didnt care too much for macauley culkin, though. maybe its just me but his long hiatus didnt really help train him to "act". he did visit michael alig in prison several times to help him get into character which was definitely comendable.

superstar dj fez was interesting to watch. i didnt expect that. marilyn manson was awesome as christina. manson described his character as a drag queen-borderline-hormonal change. hehe.

all-in-all, knowing a little of history behind the club kids helped me to appreciate the film more.

geraldo rivera used to have club kids specials in the early 90s or so. i NEVER watched that show, but i watched those specials because they fascinated me.

Keoki dated Michael Alig.

But wait. What ever happened to Freez? And how long is Michael Alig supposed to be in jail for?

I liked the movie. It was really funny to see Manson in drag. What's that guys name who played Peter Gatien? Peter Gatien is really alot smaller than that guy (and has gray hair now). Maybe he just looked small at the time, I was considerably fucked up when I met him. IDK if met is the right word, he was actually kicking me and my friends out of the Tunnel because I spit tequila at one of his bartenders as he happened to be walking by.

Dylan McDermott.

hee hee im brian's friend who wasnt familer w/ the club kids:D

i recall, long ago, reading an URB cover story on Keoki's fucked up past. I didnt realize till nearly the end of the film that the article i read was about the same club cultre portrayed in the film.

that being said, i didnt like or dislike the movie. it was interesting and it did hold my attention but it just lacked something. i really did enjoy the interview at the end w/ michael, perhaps a documentary would've been more up my alley.

im kinda confused about all the props you guys are handing out to seth green. i thought he was pretty wreched. to me he sounded like a straight guy getting drunk and pretending to be gay for 2 hours... hee hee, woops...

not my cup of tea but im glad i checked it out:)

^^ If you read the book, you'd understand how spectacular of a job Seth Green did in portraying James St. James. You have to remember that these club kids were all about excess and exageration. Everything about these club kids was wacky and insane, including how they talked. I remember seeing interviews with James St. James in the last 80's, and Seth Green was a spitting image of him and his actions... I highly recommend reading the book, it was well worth it.

yeah..

definately watching the movie you get the feeling Seth and Macauley are over acting, but after the book and documentary, they're not..

I just watched this movie for the first time last week. I really enjoyed it. I knew about the "club kids" before I watched it but I didn't know anything about keoki's past. So that was quite an interesting part of the movie for me. Makes me want to read the book now.

exactly!

This movie is so damn weird. Don't get me wrong, I am definitely into the drug movies (Fear and Loathing, Requiem for a dream, etc) but do you think it really portrays the club kids back then?? Yea the party scenes in this movie were okay, kinda made me laugh...but ehh, it was just creepy. Wilmer Valderama's hot though :) I don't care if hes a coke head, he THE DJ!
I was surprised that Keoki was in there because just days earlier I had heard of him and started downloading his music...I don't think he bad at all. Was Fez playing THE dj Keoki then? Or is it a coincidence that the names are the same?

^^ read the previous posts in this thread. yes, this movie does accurately portray the club kids of that time.

There is only one Superstar DJ Keoki, and yes, 'Fez' was playing him.

can someone please summarise the plot of the story for me and the other curious, all i've gathered so far is thats its a true story about a bunch of crazy kids getting fucked up at parties or something, cheers

seen the movie about 10 times on dvd, this movie is absolutely FABULOUS. Took me a few times to pick up on what exactly went on with the club kids but after watching it a couple of times I'd have to say it's a very well written/scripted movie. I'd love to get the book, if anyone knows in australia where to get a copy drop me a PM.

Michael Alig was a very weird character, not to mention James St. James.

has anyone got the documentary? if so can you PM me please as I'd love to watch it... I cannot seem to find it anywhere! I've got the movie (seth green movie) but didn't even know a documentary existed.

cheers!
