Warlord? Lord of War.
Wow is all I can say. I feel like I was fated to watch this movie. If this movie had a message, it performed its job perfectly in getting it across to me.
I hardly ever watch movies nowadays. I was stoned out of my goard and home alone and couldnt stand to stare at my CRT monitor anymore. I flipped through comcast digital cable's on demand feature for some movie rentals. After reading the descriptions of the available titles, I selected this as what appeared to be the least-orst option. It sounded slightly better than the Chuck Norris action thriller.
I was very wrong in my assumption of this film based on the brief abstract and a small icon in the corner which appeared to be the cover artwork. Just as Creakle said above, I wasnt very impressed with how the movie was "sold" to me. I was ready for some Bad-Boys style thriller where the good guys always win with a triumphant victory dance to the current top 40's hit.
Im pretty much a political ignoramus overall, I am aware enough as to appear slightly more intelligent than a microbial organism, but not a whole lot further. As a result of some of the lyrical content in the music I listen to, and my admiration of the History channel, Ive always sort of believed all the conspiracy stories lacking in evidence but not in accusation - accusations of the US government's true political agenda. Let me say first that I dont consider myself nieve - I dont believe there is a damned political figure in the universe that isnt there for more than the paycheck. But I never really admitted to myself that my own government steps in and squashes what we label as tyranny in some areas of the world, and supports it with money and arms in others, all based purely on what is convenient relative to American society. Basically, ive always suspected, but never really allowed myself to think deep enough to care.
I feel like a jerk now, I may as well have completely thrown away my vote in the last election because the amount of research I did on the presidential candidates can be summed up on the mail-in voting ballot. To prevent this from getting any longer, what im basically saying is that this movie had a big impact on me. Saying that it moved me emotionally is an understatement - it flat out scared the shit out of me. How graphic it portrayed the story was a good dose of reality.
I do believe in the morals that were sold to me as a young child going through the public school systems of the United States of America. I dont believe in selling those morals for convenience. What in the hell can we as a people do to show our lack of support for this kind of disregard for the quality of life when it isnt our own backyard, except for carry on in the traditions of the artists, musicians, writers, and in this case, film makers, in creating any sort of awareness? How can we do this without being disregarded as some punk/hippie/raver/other brutally stereotyped regimen of counterculture? Does it really require producing a cinematic production of international proportion?
This movie certainly sobered me up in more ways than one. I will certainly be obtaining a copy of the dvd.
