i just finished watching this.... sigh.
i thought the acting was flat as was much of the plot. i thought it was a line of hackneyed crap running thoughout the movie. the plot was slow and done way too many times before this and in much better conditions. it was just a predictible tale of the life of anyone firefighter... maybe that was the point.
phoenix was boring and stale in his emotional scenes until the end and by that point i just couldnt take one more cliche (yet he pulled out one more 'tell my wife i love her and loved her from the moment is saw her' nugget that pushed me over the edge). by that point i was finished with the movie and fast forward thought the drawn out 10 minute funeral/song ending.
i can barley stand travolta in any role he plays anymore.
and since someone has to and will bring it up... backdraft has it all over this movie... in effects, in keeping interest, in more full and rounded out characters and so on. even though that movie was full of cliched little bits (such as sex on top of the truck and the alarm goes off) at least i foudn it to be more than tolerable and dont mind watching it over and over. even though bladwin was pretty listless and boring in that movie he was better than having to watch pheonix for two hours.
i have dreams to become a firefighter and have sinc ei was in middle schol years ago... and this movie killed me to watch it. repetitive and unimaginiative.
and perhaps even just a bad play on 9/11 sympathies without crossing the scared line of that time
oh yeah SPOILER
thank fucking god he died. it was the one thing that kept this from being a complete tripe piece of shit.
