vangate?

do you mean historical vignette??

what does vangate mean? i even googled it but don't have a clue what you are trying to say :D

I have yet to see this movie, and I'm not sure I want to. From everything I've read, I don't think I'll be able to sit through it without screaming myself hoarse and breaking my monitor...

...and yet, recently there is this idea, gaining support, that obese children should be taken away from their "abusive" parents.

lol, the preacher kid. i watched children of the corn recently, if they do a remake... ;)

It pretty much rendered DD speechless.. shocking huh?

ya, that movie was really messed up.
edit: nope, sorry guys, it was removed.

i loved when they prayed for the powerpoint to work. good stuff.

i'll have to check this. they'll never know how much they have in common with islamic extremists.
the sad thing is, the woman in the movie actually PRAISES islamic extremist religion, saying that the reason they start teaching the children early (aka brainwash, to those of us on the outside) is the same reason the evangelists start teaching their children so early- because apparently it's super-cool to want to die for god, for their country.

they also basically make references to g.w.bush being god.

great documentary - but sick and disgusting at the same time.

^ Fuck, I was just going to bring those exact same points. I thought it was great that they were worshipping Bush like a sacred cow. I think everyone who considers themselves a Christian should watch this movie. Republicans like Bush would never get elected again.

I think everyone in the country should see this movie. Maybe then alot of political power will fall out of the hands of the religious elite. I think they have fucked up the country bad enough already.

I found the part with Ted Haggard to be especially funny as he was recently outed for having gay sex and smoking meth.

quoted for truth.

Saw this movie last night, my fiance and I didn't know whether to laugh or cry (that's not even an exaggeration).

And damn you egor!! I knew about the whole ted haggard thing, and when I saw him in the movie I was like WAIT!!! I ran to the comp and pulled his wiki page, then we realized that when the movie was made, haggard was still hiding the meth/homosexuality, which made the movie that much sicker.

If you find this type of topic interesting, this movie is 100% a must see. It's only an hour and 20sumthin minutes long. Haven't seen a movie I'd recommend more strongly in some time.

I want to expand a little more on the movie, as it touches some points that I've been putting out in a verrrrry long religious debate (on another board, not bl). My point was that, if you truly do believe that this life is essentially your testing ground, and determines where you spend your eternity, then the hyper-obsession we see in these films makes more sense. I almost don't want to say this because I'm not sure if I'll phrase it right, but I have more respect for the christians in this movie than your regular christian. If you're a true christian, and believe fully in the bible, then isn't this earth just a brief, extremely brief, point in your being? This life is tiny, the afterlife is forever/infinity, and will be heaven or hell (or purgatory I guess, depending which flavor of christianity you choose). If you truly believe that, the way these people act actually reflects their beliefs. It's almost like that episode (two part episode actually) of southpark ("do the handicapped go to hell?" part 1, and "probably" part 2), where the kids are so hyper obsessed with heaven or hell, to the point where if they say 'damnit' or any curse word, they race to the church to repent, because if they die they need to do so with a clean slate.

It seems the kids in southpark, and the kids in this movie, truly do believe in what their religion is about, and your regular joe schmoe church goer who half asses it is the phony religious poser.

(a little off topic from what my point was, but about the movie itself, there's a 'main' little girl and boy, if you've seen it you know which ones I'm talking about, the ones we know will grow up the most twisted. Doesn't the boy (he has this half mullet / half rat tail thing going on) kind of remind you of rob coronado, the ELF guy who served time for firebombing/eco-terrorism?)

Yes, and the Muslim suicide bombers who think that blowing themselves up in the middle of a crowded market are true Muslims... not at all like the ones that, you know... don't blow themselves up.

The people in this movie are all zealots, period. They don't "believe" that god is real. They "know" that god is real. And that is absolutely fucking absurd.

The kids in the movie believe it because they don't fucking know any better.

They have been indoctrinated with godfire since birth. Put the fear of god into a child and they will believe... because they are too scared not to. It's no different than telling a child that Santa Clause is real... only people don't start wars in his name.

I feel that the things they were doing to the kids in this movie is flat out wrong. Teach your kids good christian morals if you want... just don't teach them to be closed minded bigots with no ability to think for themselves.

It's funny how many times while watching it I was thinking of how they're brainwashed just like with santa, only they're never told that it's wrong...

You feel it's flat out wrong because you're not an evangelical christian. If you were, and truly believed in it, wouldn't you feel required to push it on your kids? My fiance brought this up during the movie, that it's sad that it's such young kids being so blatantly brainwashed. But, if you think about, if the parents truly 100% believe that it's the way/path, then being true to their beliefs they would behave that way with their kids.

(question - is this considered normal/close to normal by evangelical christians, or is this an extreme version that is drastically different than typical evangelical christians?)

i, along with others here apparently, had a hard time watching this movie. i actually couldnt finish it. i think it was well-done. honestly, it was as neutral as it could be given the subject matter.

every single adult in that movie made my skin crawl. every single child filled my heart with pitty.

i dont think i realized how large the fundamentalist christian community was before i watched this.... and i sure as shit didnt think that they prayed to a cardboard cut out of bush.... *shudders*

No one is arguing with the reasons why the parents were raising their kids like that. They made it perfectly clear in the movie that the parents wanted their children to be god FEARING. The problem is that they are so fucking self-righteous that they refuse to accept that there could be any other way to raise their children.

If they are 100% certain that god wants them to convert Iraqis to christianity, Harry Potter is the devil and that god will send them to hell if they don't repent for swearing, then they are fucking delusional.

I was raised as a good catholic boy, but my ability to think for myself eventually took over. I read about many other different religions, philosophies and ways of life. I now believe in NO god whatsoever. I am a very staunch atheist. VERY.

However, I will not force my own beliefs upon my children. If they want to go to church, I will let them. If they want to shave their head and join the Hare Krishna, fine. Just as long as they are doing it because they WANT to, not because they are terrified of going to hell for eternity.

There is a difference between raising a child to be a kind, just person and to be a blind zealot with a lose grasp on reality.

a "true" christian? be careful there, even the evangelicals aren't. don't forget they still go to to church when they are ragging.

yup, shit was intense. My eyes kept glazing while watching it, actually my brother and a friend of his just came by and I showed them some of the more intense parts and he could barely watch it (he's a sensitive kid :) )

If you see them as 100% certain of their beliefs, and thus delusional, how do you reconcile:

Sounds you're 100% certain of your atheism, which to me, sounds pretty close minded. I'm agnostic (I'm sure that's already been pieced together), from where I'm standing, anyone who's 100% certain about things that we cannot know with certainty is deluded.
