a solid effort
NSIDE MAN (2006) my bf & I wanted a good popcorn flick & with INSIDE
MAN we got exactly what we paid for, nothing more, nothing less. All
the leads including Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster &
Willem Dafoe turn in sold performances & it's the least over indulgent
work that director Spike Lee has ever turned in.
INSIDE MAN almost seems like a calling card from Lee to the rest of
the industry, saying "hey, I can make a moneymaking popcorn
blockbuster that won't embarrass you". Although it's a popcorn flick
there are a few Lee trademarks such as the Sikh character who bristles
when called an "Arab" & the usual Rainbow Coalition of suspects in
terms of minor characters.
There is something very interesting that Lee pulls off here though
*********MINOR SPOILER AHEAD***************************
During the first part of the film, when we think INSIDE MAN is just
another heist flick, Lee shoots & scores the film just like any other
in the genre. We hear the typical bombastic brass & percussion on the
soundtrack & the film uses the same sort of angles & cuts that we've
come to expect with films that usually star either Harrison Ford or
Bruce Willis. There's even an annoying hand held camera sequence. But,
as anyone who has seen the trailers knows, INSIDE MAN is actually NOT
a heist film. When the Denzel Washington character realizes that the
bank robbery is just a cover for something else the film suddenly
changes style. The over orchestrated music stops & when there is music
we get Terrance Blanchard's bizarre bass & trumpet notes that ricochet
like bullets.
**********END SPOLER***************************************
INSIDE MAN suffers from some giant plot holes & a not completely
satisfying resolution, but it is very good popcorn entertainment & I
was entertained throughout. Lee pays homage to & then
subverts/parodies heist thrillers/hostage dramas & comes up with
something refreshing. INSIDE MAN is more in the tradition of great NYC
street dramas from the 1970s like THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 & THE
FRENCH CONNECTION (but is nowhere near that class). The film isn't a
classic by any measure but is a much better than average diversion & a
lot of fun.
Something did occur the night I saw the film that was pretty
disturbing. One of the trailers was for UNITED 93, the theatrical film
based on the events of 9-11 (the plane where the passengers fought
back). I have NO problem with filmmakers addressing this topic. As a
matter of fact I think it's time for more artists to face 9-11 head
on. I also have no problem with a studio promoting such a film & I am
glad that a major studio is uncowed by the constant bleats of "too
soon". What disturbed me though was seeing this trailer right before
an escapist thriller. Nobody came to see INSIDE MAN for anything else
but a few hours of escape. Running a trailer for UNITED 93 right
before INSIDE MAN is as appropriate as promoting SAW II right before
ICE AGE 2. Especially in a NYC cinema (I live in Manhattan).
