This movie is one of my all time favourite movies and I think it totally is funny yet disturbing in a good way. Although its an oldish movie 2000 I think. I couldn't find a thread when I seached for it.

Who else has seen this movie? What did you think?

I saw it and thought it was super "gay" (pun intended). Movies about nyphymaniac gay crossdressers just ain't my style.

I love this movie.

So what if there were gay themes throughout the movie? It's all about trying to discover who you are...

I'm a fan of the soundtrack as well.

Yeah its a gay movie its about a transvestite who's in love with a male rockstar sheesh.

Why did you find it depressing? The only depressing part is that Hedwig is never accepted. As a boy growing up in War torn East Eurpoe he was forced to become a woman because it was the only way to excape the war. Then he went to America and was not excepted because his sex change operation had been botched and he was really neither man nor woman. I think thats the only depressing part and the movie doesn't really go into that side of the story in too much detail.

Truthfully most of this movie is pretty uplifting and funny. I can't really see why you found it depressing.

I guess its depressing that the guy that Hedwig is in love with wont admit that he loves Hedwig back because he comes from a strict Catholic background that doesn't believe in gay love. yeah some parts are semi depressing but most of it is pretty funny.

There are funny parts, but you've already said why it's depressing. He's a warchild, he's completely lost, so much so that he flees to another country, then he gets a sex change, which, when botched, not only makes things worse, but drives home the point to himself and the audience how messed up he is. Then, as he gets older, one of the few things he is sure of, his affection for another, is not fulfilled either, because the object of his affection is younger emotionally and physically, and confused himself. It sucks to be Hedwig. Having said that, I really liked his character...

But Hedwig isn't depressed nor does he make the audience feel sorry for him. Well I never did. He's a great character who makes light out of his situation. Altough he goes though a few unfortunate situations in the movie he doesn't dwell on these but rather makes it humerous. Therefor this is not a depressing movie.

one of the best original soundtracks ever IMO... compliments a beautiful story perfectly.

I just recently saw a live stage performance of this and it was unreal.

I didn't realise it was a play converted into a movie.

If anyone see's the play travelling in there area I definately recommend it.
