we're watching this tonight on the biggest screeen in the world (sydney imax). the last 20-30 minutes of the film is also in 3D. w00t!

nb. i didn't like the first one that much and the second pissed me off so i've never seen the third. for shits and giggles saw the fourth and liked it. maybe i should revisit the others again.

^ which girl? :)

i saw it tonight and enjoyed it. for me, this was my least favourite of the books but seeing the movie made me realise that perhaps i missed some of the subtlety of the 5th book so i may go back and reread it. actually, i expect i'll reread them all before '...the deathly hallows'.

the actors are all now very comfortable in their roles and i saw moments of real depth in many of the performances which i perhaps hadn't seen before.

the entire 2 hours and 20 minutes just flew by which is normally a good sign.

good film. not great. just good. for some reason i see the main kid who plays harry as having difficulty being a genuine actor. it seems at times that he obviously waiting for cues for instance.
ultimately an enjoyable 2+ hours. the 3d climax was bloody spectacular to say the least, despite the shit house second row seats we were forced to sit in cuz f was late (i waiting in line an hour for nothing :X).

maybe i was just sold on the kittens.

i enjoyed the first film, but have been bored with the rest, though i adore the story itself. the kids are going tonight, not sure if i can be bothered to go to be honest. i think i will wait for cable for this one.

i think you might be pleasantly surprised at this one... it seems to be a nice middle-of-the-road HP flick...

Stupidly I read the last book before I saw this movie.

NSFW:

While I did enjoy the visuals and most of the plot lines they did include in the film, I was disappointed with the choppy pace and structure of the plot as a whole. When it was over, I thought 'That's it??!!!" All the scenes in the film built up to a fight scene that was pretty disappointing. My main problem was that the explanation for the prophecy was brushed over. All harry learns is that one dies and one lives; is that what all these great wizards and witches were battling for? As I recall, the book made this little tidbit much more juicy and satisfying to know for the reader.

There were some great scenes though, namely the Weasley's spectacular exit from Hogwarts, acting of Luna and Bellatrix, the first 6 times Umbridge appeared, comraderie of the students, just to name a few.

3/5 stars.

Did anyone else notice that most of the previews were for Harry Potter-esque fantasy movie knock-offs?

Neil Gaiman's Stardust could hardly be considered a 'knock off'... but what was the other fantasy one ... I remember there being two.

There were three, if my memory serves. That one was the only one I remember... but the other two....meh.

Stardust looks good. It's a great book, and should hopefully translate into a top film. The other two looked relatively shite. I also can't remember what they were ;)

given the book is 800 pages long and the movie can't, for obvious practical reasons, be 6 hours long what alternative do you suggest?

what would you have put in that they left out? why?

Alfonso Cauron's PoA was the bomb. Closest thing to a 'film' this series will probably ever get.

I agree.

Order of the Phoenix is mediocre, as this franchise goes. None of these films are meant (I hope) to be anything other than escapist fantasy fare, and as that is succeeds. They are getting thematically darker, so it's not quite the light entertainment it once was, but this is a good thing as the franchise is never stagnant.

The plot is uneven and some crucial parts of the story struck me as nonsensical. Despite all the magical powers and spells at their disposal, no one in the magic world can prove that Harry saw Voldemort in the last film or that he was living in the back of some dude's head prior to that? That's asking for a pretty big willing suspension of disbelief. I haven't read any of these books, which I consider to be ephemeral trash, but I'm assuming the source material is to blame for the plot holes.

The acting fails to impress as well. Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon and Robbie Coltrane are stellar, as usual, but everyone else was flat. If you don't hold child actors to the same standards as their adult counterparts, then the main characters are tolerably well acted. Daniel Radcliffe shines in a few scenes. Helena Bonham Carter gets no screen time and when she is on screen, she just gnashes her teeth like a spittle-dribbling vampire. Gary Oldman doesn't get enough screen time either, and his character seems to have lost some of the untamed fringe appeal it had in previous installments. I'd like to stress how brilliant I think Michael Gambon is as Dumbledore.

I really went to this movie for the special effects, and they are very good (as you would expect with a budget larger than the GDP of Zambia), but nothing really jumped out as being spectacular. The camera is constantly moving and panning on the effect composites so it's hard to get a good look at what would otherwise be extraordinary sequences. This is most noticeable in the climactic battle scene with the Death Eaters; camera movement is so frenetic you can't get a good look at anything. The bread and butter sequences (energy shooting from wands, etc.) are done very well and blend into the movie's reality so you hardly even think of them as effects. The prank the Weasley's stage is visually appealing, but borrows heavily from Fellowship of the Ring (where the same idea is done better).

Ultimately, I was hoping for something more but wasn't disappointed with what I got.
