Has anyone seen this? It stars Scarlett Johanssen, who has to be one of the yummiest visions ever. I was a little reluctant to rent it, and probably never would have if it wasn't for the unusual occurrance of a weekend without my other half and a shortage of other chick flicks on offer...

I was surprised by how much I liked it. It was slow and moody, but beautifully balanced, with a lot of latent emotion. I was fascinated by the life of servants in that era and what they had to endure... I guess I just really like period pieces too.

All in all, a gorgeous movie, thoroughly recommend it.

I was also reluctant to watch this movie. In fact the only reason I did was because my roommate rented it and I had nothing better to do. But to my surprise I really enjoyed it. I had never seen any of Scarlett Johanssen's movies but she was excellent! I loved that there wasn't much dialoge on her part but she was still such a strong character..

I saw this recently at the cinema and I can't make my mind up about it. However, the good points where the lighting (very realistic, not overlit) and some of the framing which made some scenes look like paintings.

^ Yep there were so many subtle layers to the dialogue too, like washes over a painting. For example when Griet moves the chair out of the set-up he's painting, Vermeer asks why and Griet answers "because she (the dummy model) looked trapped". Reflecting, obviously, her state of mind at that point in time.

I just have to add, that her other suitor, the butcher boy - *fans self* HOTNESS!!

I enjoyed this movie. Its kinda quiet..not a whole lot happens in the story, but I found it very fascinating.

And yes, the butcher boy-YUM! It drove me nuts watching that movie trying to think of who that guy was...I eventually had to look up his name on the net to see it was the guy who wakes up in the hospital in "28 days later". Ultimate hottness.

i agree it was subtle and skillful... the layering and slowness of the movie is comparable to the knickerbocker/nouvea riche era dramas and literature- where the adultrey is never consumated after months of tortured corespondance. slow, building and ultimately one should feel cheated and unfullfilled but does not.

as a student of the arts what i really enjoyed about this film was that it was like watching vermeer's and other dutch masters' paintings walk off a canvas.
the see the men, the outfits, the scenes move and change... weird.

I just watched this film last night for the first time. It was one of the best I've seen in awhile. It was real, moved at a slower pace, but it didn't lose my interest either.

I agree with the above, after studying these artists and their famous works it's interesting to think about how they came to be and see it played out on screen.
