I just saw this movie. It's a great character driven drama that is very engaging, and often funny. Although it was built on a strong plot (based on a true story), it was truly the cast that made this film a success for me.
Seeing Hanks and Hoffman interact is amazing. They are both such strong actors and compelling characters that it is hard to tell who steals the show. Julia Roberts plays a good supporting role, filling the female lead and playing the perfect counterpart to Hanks' womanizing (sort of) character.
The plot moves along nicely. The pace is kept up with snappy dialogue accompanied by some occaisonally brilliant cinematography (the scenes at the refugee camp standing out in this respect), and the intersection of diplomacy and espionage makes for some interesting situations.
My only complaint is that they didn't draw out the ending a bit longer, since we all know there is so much more to the story. But this can be forgiven because the place where it does end is a reasonable breaking off point between the characters involvement and the later results of their actions.
Overall, a great movie. It gets my reccommendation.
Any thoughts?
