Film: Casablanca (1942)

So it took me 30 years to actually sit down and watch this movie. I always just close-mindedly dismissed it as "some cheesy old black and white type movie that could never hold my interest" since I'm into contemporary movies. In fact up until I watched Casablanca, I had a prejudice towards any old black and white films even if somebody recommended it to me.

Anyway, the other night I decided to open up my mind and watch this classic to see what all the hype was about. I was in for a treat, this movie cast a spell on me that riveted me to my seat. I got sucked into the dystopia of Casablanca and fit right in with all the sordid characters. It takes place in the dusty tinhorn city of Casablanca in Morocco.

Basically I don't think I can make the movie sound interesting, since when it was described to me, it didn't sound interesting - you just gotta see it. IMO It's an awesome movie, I watched it 3 times in the last week.

The plot is pretty simple;
Humphrey Bogart plays Rick, the owner of Cafe Americain, a fancy little gin joint in Casablanca, Morrocco – which is a main center for escape from war-torn Europe during WWII because the Nazi's have no control there. Basically all these cool cats come to Rick's including his ex-lover Ilsa, and Victor Lazlo, a concentration camp survivor and enemy of the Third Reich. The Nazi's are desperate to recapture Lazlo. He has escaped from their grip too many times and they're not about to let him leave Casablanca alive. The charaters all get swept up in danger.

All the characters are instantly solid and classic, Bogart is totally cool like "Deckard" in "Bladerunner", men are men, women are beautiful and strong, the bad guys are the good guys, The "Café Americain" is full of smoke, booze, vice, and mystery.

I can tell now that "Bladerunner" borrowed some style from this film.

I highly recommend sitting down some day and watching it.

I love this movie.

Love, love, love.

I watch it at least once a month; I kid you not.

yep one of my favourite movies also.. i just have to visit casablanca one day!

I hope this has changed your bias against what you call "black & white type movies". A very many old B&W's are pure GOLD.

^it certainly has changed my bias. I wonder what else I've missed. The only other Black & White movie I watched is Eraserhead, which was awesome too. And of course I'm a huge fan of all the old Twilight Zone TV shows. If you got some quality recommendations I'd love to hear 'em. I'm always on the look out for a good movie that I can sink my teeth into.

b&w recommendations???

Citizen Kane
The Maltese Falcon
All About Eve
Dr. Strangelove
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

any of the old Kubricks... Killers Kiss, Lolita.
Ingmar Bergman's Seventh Seal was just great.
Rumble fish is another recommendation.

Dr. Strangelove
My dad is always pushin that one on me but I've never seen it. He loves that movie. That's next on the list. Thanks for the recommendations. Yeah I've never seen Citizen Kane I hate to admit.

metropolis
M
battleship potempkin
modern times
12 Angry Men

+1 on the Kurosawa recommendation, in particularly Rashomon and Seven Samurai
+1 on Lolita (outrageous) and Dr Stangelove (very witty, and funny to see a young James Earl Jones)

Don't worry, I finally saw Citizen Kane for the first time a couple of months ago!

I also get much pleasure from Edward D Wood Jr films. Plan 9, Glen or Glenda, Bride of the Monster, Jail Bait, etc.

dr stranglove is one of the best movies ever. You'll love it.

I saw this in my b&w phase and was totally excited then dissapointed as I wasn't really enthralled by it. A bit bored, actually.

Seconding 12 Angry men, adored it!

"b&w phase"

yeh went though one of those too. :)

Anyhow just watched Hiroshima Mon Amour, which I highly recommened. Its along the lines of Wong Kar Wai's In The Mood For Love etc.
