12 Angry Men is one of the finest films ever made, and certainly one of the best from the 1950s, a decade that didn't feature all that many enduring classics.

The plot is simple. Twelve men drawn from a broad cross-section of American society are sequestered in a jury room to deliberate on the fate of an 18 year old ethnic minority from the slums who is accused of stabbing his father in the chest. The case appears to be open and shut and everyone is eager to vote and get on with their lives. Henry Fonda, who turns in yet another stellar performance in a career that is full of them, is the only dissenting voice. He argues that the accused is entitled to at least a few minutes of discussion (the mandatory sentence for murder at that time being the death penalty).

The rest of the film revolves around Henry Fonda trying to convince the other 11 jurors to change their votes. It gradually reveals the facts of the case, as well as the personalities (and underlying prejudices, pasts and beliefs) of the diverse jurors who range from blue collar workers to advertising execs. It is an expert exploration of group dynamics and, more overtly, of the criminal justice system in this country. It tangentially treats some racial and socioeconomic issues, but does not explore them in depth.

The film is obviously based on a stage play due to the total dominance of dialogue and utter lack of conventional dramatic flair. It is twelve guys talking in a room for 100 minutes. The discourse is excellent, as is the interplay between characters. All the actors do a good job of internalizing the motivation and personalty of their characters. It's a very intelligent examination of the somewhat arbitrary nature of the US jury system - how the fate of another human being is subject to the whims of twelve total strangers.

Very well filmed, well acted and beautifully written. You might not think that a movie about twelve guys in a room talking for an hour and a half would be interesting, but if you don't have ADD then 12 Angry Men is a must see.

Although I'm not a fan of theater, seeing most films now a days just try to be realistic it's nice seeing a movie so theatrical. Every movement is purposeful and the dialog is excellent and compelling. Like when they all back away from the racist, it's great to watch. The writing is also so well, with the story being revealed almost systematically and details from earlier being brought up again, that it is very engaging with, almost surprisingly, no dull moments.

Actually the plot is a bit more complicated than that. Henry Fonda's character only insists on discussing the case at first. Isn't he ready to fold at one stage if everyone else was still without reasonable doubt?

But that's what makes this film special. This isn't one man on a mission of justice or compassion. He's on a mission of reason. But every other man is on their own motives too: from emotional baggage, racial bigotry, all the way to finishing quickly to go to the baseball. This superb interplay of 12 rock solid and refreshingly distinct characters works towards drama of the finest quality.

this is america's "rashomon" imo.

I equally enjoy the original and the 90's remake. enough to have written and rewitten a short parody called "12 angry cunts" a few times.

i wonder when alasdairm'll see this thread.

i can't believe that there isn't a thread on this already.

this is, as you seem to know, my favourite movie of all time. :)

no special effects, only 1.5 sets and some the finest acting and writing you'll ever experience in the cinema. i agree with l2r - juror #8's motivation isn't his belief that the accised is innocent. it's simply his reasonable doubt. in the current political climate (in the us) this movie is more relevant than ever.

As shooting of the film went on, director Sidney Lumet gradually changed to lenses of longer focal lengths, so that the backgrounds seemed to close in on the characters, creating a greater feeling of claustrophobia.
so simple. so effective.

i once hear that the entire movies was shot out of sequence with all the noth-facing shots, then all the east facing shots, etc. that seems little far fetched to me. obviously, almost all movies are shot out of sequence simply in light of the practicalities of movie making but i'm always amazed how tight this movie is in spite of that.

5 stars!

on the 90's remake, i differ from l2r. maybe it's just a sign of the times but, for me, a huge part of the power of the original are the race and class factors. perhaps the diverse ethnic make up of the jury in the remake is appropriate but having 12 white men decide rthe fate of a poor latino just adds to the drama. i haven't seen it (the remake) for a while so maybe i need to revisit it.

interestingly, the remake was shot in sequence.

the remake is special to me since it was the first version i saw.

also, i'd like to add, i don't know how, but when i watch this film (either version), i feel the temperature of the summer heat in the film, as well as smell the rain when the weather changes.
