Harm Reduction Fentanyl Heroin mix...What could I have said?

Hi all!

In my area we've had a lot of overdoses and deaths due to the fentanyl/heroin mix. For a while we (I'm a Harm Reduction Counselor at an SEP) didn't hear much as it seemed like it was coming from a very specific area we hadn't really tapped into yet. A few reports said it looked a little lighter, people weren't really asking for the mix, and so might not have been told what was in it. Another report said the fentanyl was "really shitty quality", and a few researchers around the state have said they haven't been able to identify exactly what it is.

I had someone come to see me today and said there was a new person selling, and the fentanyl was coming right from the script this person has but doesn't use. They heard someone had almost died, and wanted to see if it was as good as it sounded. They said it was, and it was different from the kind that was circulating for a while. Much more expensive too. We talked about what a new user should know that I could relay on my end such as only doing one bag at a time, and not paying above a certain amount per bag (if they're getting it 2nd or 3rd hand and aren't asking for a mix). Basically, stuff they were already doing that I could share on my end.

What I was hoping from you all is any experience you might be able to share with me about the fentanyl/heroin mix so I can better understand, what tips would be useful to pass on to others to avoid such an easy overdose and death (especially since Narcan is useless with this)...Or maybe I am looking for someone to tell me what they might have told this person coming to me for help. As they said "I just want to keep people safe and alive". I would really, really appreciate any help with this <3

im from buffalo, NY. and that fentanyl/heroin mixture was on the streets a lil over a month ago and the police were charging this one drug dealer who was in possession of that batch, with 1 count of murder for each overdose death, literally no exaggeration..im sure the courts will drop the murder charge but still..dangerous world.i watched the news and the guy talking said the peple overdosed and died within 30mins of injecting the combination, and its VERY dangerous. i mean ur mixing 2 of the most strongest opioids together and throwing it in a bag, what ya expect gonna happen, u know..just be careful. heroin is russian roulette, u can get strong shit and die, or a cut with another drug and die, or a paranoid heroin dealer who may think ur "sketchy" and end up putting a hot jumper in ur bags (spiking it with rat poision or whatever) the dealers are known to poison certain customers whom they feel are snitches or customers who have ripped dealers off in there little gangs or whatever.,..its a huge gamble!

The only advice for care when it comes to any drug really (especially ones with higher risk like heroin) is to dose cautiously and to tester doses.

When a new batch presents itself, a tester shot or bump, whatever the ROA, can save your life. The idea is to do significantly less than you normally would for the first dose in order to see if the new batch is much stronger/weaker than usual. Then you redose from there.
