Last night I lit a candle before I fell asleep i know bad idea for numerous reasons. And when I woke up today it was smokey and burnt. I have thick clear mucus with black stuff in it coming up in a cough and out of my nose when I blow it. I'm a little bit worried about this to say the least because it is what I assume to be soot. I also already have bronchitis at the moment so this has just confounded that problem, I have this horrible taste when I breath in and out it is like the smell from the burnt candle. I'd go to the doctor but I don't have health insurance and have pretty much decided to ride this out at home if I can. I'm already on antibiotics so I would hope that they could help with this situation as well. I'd really appreciate some peoples input on this.

Pretty much I was just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone here and If you have any tips.

...this situation is rather unfortunate

I cough up black sooty stuff after smoking weed for days in a row. Always been harmless. I mean, Im sure its not healthy; but it wont kill you.

I honestly would not worry about it - you can do a Saline nasal rinse (nasal irrigation) which would get rid of the sooty taste but in all honesty the smell/taste will go in a few days. You need to be careful falling asleep with a naked flame burning though.

Thanks for your help.

The issue is the candle was already burned low so it was mostly wick smoke that i inhaled my ceiling has soot on it. The worst part right now is this smell and taste that wont go away I hope it's gone in a few days like your saying Bearlove. I also have this weird feeling, probably due to me inhaling all the smoke. I just hope I didn't get poisoned or something. I've been doing a lot of reading about how the wicks contain all different types of chemicals and what not. I'm trying not to let myself get bugged out tho.

This was all very silly of me, I'll never sleep in candlelight again :(

Normally candles would not leave that kind of residue on the ceiling though (unless you burn one in the same place every night). The two major chemicals (benzene /Toluene) are found in the soot but not in such a concentrated manner that would cause you problems by inhaling the vapor from one candle being burnt in a normal size room.

I hope your feeling better soon,

I do burn candles in that same spot pretty frequently, maybe it is partly from past accumulation. I think that there not being enough wax left last night made it a lot more smokey than normal. I also left it burning for like 7 hours while I was passed out. It was pretty careless of me and when I woke up and smelt my room I was like wtf. It still smells up there. My throat had this thick coat of nastiness in it when I woke up, and my head had this strange chemical kind of feeling going on. Hopefully I will be feeling better tomorrow.

You seem to know quite a bit about the composition of candles Bearlove, your helping to put my mind at ease.

If you have access to herbal medicine, get slippery elm, marshmallow root, and mullein. Put a tablespoon of each in a pot with enough water to fill a tea mug, plus half more. Bring to boil then simmer for 5-10 minutes. Strain and drink.

Take this twice a day. It'll moisten the lungs, clear congestion, and promote expectoration of garbage.

Thank you Foreigner, I'll look into acquiring those herbs.

Well I did end up going to the emergency because things got quite a bit worse, I started producing an ungodly amount of white foamy sputum and I got worried. They did a x-ray of my lungs and said that they don't appear damaged or have fluid in them. But the doctors did agree that they are as I assumed full of the contaminants. They told me that I will be alright though that my body will remove it all, just that it could take a week or more. I'm just going to have to be patient during this process.

I have to constantly keep cleaning this stuff out of my breathing passage all day long and it's tiresome. It also makes it impossible to sleep because I keep having to get up to clear my throat. Thankfully though the smell is starting to lesson and it's fading into the background now. This whole situation has seriously been a nightmare, and to think it all started with me lighting a candle for ambiance.

Please be careful people and learn from my mistake, don't ever fall asleep with a candle left burning.
