Delay thread mergers until some criterion is reached
I just saw a complaint in the B&D Salvia thread about people never seeing info after mergers (in this case, regarding a separate Salvia Clones thread). I agree that merging helps information survive (a few threads I started simply vanished after "spring cleaning), and proper searching - salvia divinorum clones site:bluelight.ru - demonstrates you can find just what you're searching for within the merger threads post-merger so long as titles are well matched to content.
But merging too soon does tend to stifle discussion and, in effect, cuts off any other information that discussion might have otherwise wrought.
For example, recently the thread "CandyFlipping at Six Flags (+Salvia Maybe)" received 17 replies in about 24 hours, then was merged into the 'Tripping in a theme park' thread on 2-2-2010. As of 2-5-2010, no new posts have been made. I've no doubt that if someone actually did an analysis of average posts per hour during each day pre and post merger for a number of other merged threads this example would show itself to be part of a larger trend. Maybe for merger candidate threads some post rate criteria could be adopted whereby a thread doesn't get merged until it falls below something like 2 posts in a 24 hour period?
