WASHINGTON — About 12,000 federal prisoners nationwide may soon go home, some as much as three years early, under a U.S. Sentencing Commission decision to allow retroactive reductions in prison terms for inmates convicted of crack-cocaine offenses.

The commission voted unanimously Thursday to bring "unfairly long sentences" for crack offenders, mostly African Americans, more in line with shorter terms given powder-cocaine offenders, often white and sometimes affluent.

More steps in the right direction...seriously, jail doesn't help people who are desperate as it is. Crack is definitely stronger than coke from what I understand but at its root, it is the same chemical. The article doesn't seem wrong either-crack is not really seen in rich, southern, white towns such as my own, however, the affluent teenagers in this place have a moderate taste for powder.

I bet they'll be overjoyed and leave harbouring no animosity whatsoever towards the society/legal system that locked them in a cage for years. Yay.
