WASHINGTON — The maker of the painkiller Darvon is pulling the drug off the market under pressure from public health officials who say it causes potentially deadly heart rhythms.

The Food and Drug Administration said Friday that Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals has agreed to halt marketing of Darvon and the related brand Darvocet, which have been subject to safety concerns for decades.

Three studies by McGill University researchers presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience on Sunday show that the way we navigate the world today may indeed affect just how well our brains function as we age.

The FDA has also called on generic drugmakers to stop marketing low-cost drugs containing the active ingredient in Darvon, called propoxyphene.

About 10 million people in the U.S. received prescriptions for Darvon and related drugs in 2009, according to the FDA.

Friday's action puts the U.S. in line with Britain and the European Union, which previously decided to ban Darvon due to suicides and accidental overdoses.

FDA officials said they decided to take action based on a recent study showing Darvon interferes with the electrical activity of the heart, causing irregular heart rhythms that can be fatal.

"With the new study results, for the first time we now have data showing that the standard therapeutic dose of propoxyphene can be harmful to the heart," Dr. Gerald Dal Pan, director of FDA's office of surveillance and epidemiology said in a statement.

Dal Pan said patients taking Darvon should continue taking the medication until their doctor prescribes a replacement therapy. Other commonly-prescribed opioid drugs for pain include oxycodone and morphine.

Darvon, which was first approved in the 1950s, is an opioid narcotic used to treat mild to moderate pain. The consumer watchdog group Public Citizen had petitioned the FDA to ban the drug, saying its benefits didn't justify a risk that added up to several hundred deaths a year.

And at a public FDA meeting held in January 2009, a panel of outside experts voted 14-12 that the drug should be pulled from the market.

But the FDA disagreed, and later that year agency officials said they would keep the drug on the market with a bolder warning label about the risk of overdoses.

Based in Newport, Ky., Xenodyne Pharmaceuticals is a privately-held company focused on pain-relieving drugs.

Great, a shitty, shitty drug off the market. darvocet is incredibly shitty and does nothin to reduce pain. its straight fuckin garbage. I hope that this drug gettin pulled will give doctors less of an option to prescribe a shitty non working drug and force them to use something a little better. I hope that it dont have the effect of them saying "oh, well now the only drugs left are the really strong super potent painkillers like hydrocodone and codeine, so we will just have to put you on naproxen since your pain dont require those ultra-potent heroin-like pills."

I really hope canada ends up pulling darvon off the market here too. Even though it's not nearly as commonly prescribed as codeine, oxycodone, morphine or even the other old opioid with little use demerol a few quacks who think it's safer then codeine or oxycodone still prescribe it. Usually it's only old doctors who have prescribed it for years that script it here but they tend to prescribe alot of it.

I have only taken it twice in the form of darvon-N and both times i got sick as a dog on only a few pills. It does nothing for pain at all either. As much as i don't like tramadol (which doctors often hand out here in sample packs) it's alot better then darvon. I wouldnt even accept darvon for free if i was dopesick :p

Ahh.. this might be why I likened Tramadol to Darvon in the other post. (the "dirty" feeling I mentioned.) -- Sorry about that, I didn't see this post.

From the Tramadol WIKI:

"Tramadol is somewhat pharmacologically similar to levorphanol as both opioids are also NMDA-antagonists which also have SNRI activity (other such opioids to do the same are dextropropoxyphene (Darvon) & M1-like molecule tapentadol (Nucynta, a new synthetic atypical opioid made to mimic the agonistic properties of tramadol's metabolite, M1(O-Desmethyltramadol)."

Was this really still being heavily prescribed? I rarely ever hear of it anymore. Still good that it got pulled, though.

Tramadol >>>>>> Propoxyphene.

Fuck that, yo. They both suck ass. I could never understand the people who claim to get high off tramadol or get any kind of anything at all from it. The shit is garbage, just like darvocet. I wish they would get the fuck rid of all these crappy half-ass excuses for opiates that dont really do jack shit for anybody except maybe a little bit for the opiate-naieve. It would be nice if there was no more of these crap-ass drugs for doctors to give in place of the ones that really work. then maybe they would be forced to actually use shit thats effective for once instead of offering patients these pathetic excuses for painkillers.

Opiate naeive like the majority of the population. Iv got a friend who broke his arm and Tram was very effective at controling the pain.

its garbage just like Motrin, shit destroys the liver because doctors wont prescribe things that work

At least Motrin WORKS.

Actually, it's pretty much the only painkiller that does anything for my headaches.

I could have a headache and eat an OC/P-80 and I'd still have the headache.

200-800mg of Motrin kill the headache completely almost every time.

Ibuprofen is a wonderful drug for light to moderate pain and has its place w/ occasional use. (and for severe pain Motrin w/ some hydrocodone or oxy works wonders.)

Certainly a liver killer though, no doubt about that. I think it's MAYBE a little better than acetaminophen in that dept. (maybe just because it works.) Tylenol has never done a damn thing for me ever..

Just like anything though, too much is bad, bad bad.

I'm scripted 2400mg per day of Motrin for chronic pain (along with some other stupid drugs) but there is no way in hell I would take that much for any length of time.

your right it does work for minor injury but god damn why the fuck would a doctor even prescribe that long term.... instead of working with their patient to find something light that works, im sure you havent tried everything. sorry for getting of topic

Oh -- That's because most Dr's are F'n idiots.

My Suboxone doc (now ex sub doc) who was an addiction specialist prescribed me Klonopin for several months and then one day simply said "We're stopping your Klonopin." and said that it wasn't addictive at all.

WTF?!

I just nodded my head, as usual. I never pretend to know anything with any Dr.

Glad I only took the prescribed Klonopin occasionally.

Love it.. yeah.. Umm.. back to topic. Haha.

Dr's stupid. Darvocet bad.

For the record, ibuprofen fucks with the stomach and kidneys, not so much the liver (that would be APAP). Yeah, Darvon sucks. I actually saw a script come in for it the day after it was pulled and our computer blocked it. Good times.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize it was primarily the kidneys w/ Ibuprofen.

Off topic but i think tramadol actually has it's uses unlike darvon. It's a SNRI and does seem to lift some peoples moods alot and often works for people who have tried everything else. It does fuck all for my mood really except for making me feel weird. Granted the longest ive ever taken it for is 5 days since ive heard tramadol withdrawal is fucking brutal. Plus when i run out of my usual opiate script i can get OTC codeine so why bother with tramadol?

I really wish doctors would stop listening to drug companies because they seem to think that tramadol is like morphine! Someone i know had a really severe second degree and maybe mild 3rd degree burn and they got prescribed fucking tramadol at the hospital for fuck sakes :! . I guess since it's not scheduled at all here that that is another incentive to prescribe it instead of some painkiller that actually works. I really havent seen tramadol work for anyone i know no matter how opioid naive they are or how minor the pain is.

Im really glad that darvon is off the american market because that shit is dangerous and completely useless for anything. I really hope the same thing happens in Canada but i doubt it will for awile. That is unless it just stops being manufactured here. Currently you can only get propoxyphene here in the form of darvon-N which is 100mg's of propoxyphene napsylate per pill or in the form of 642 tab's which are 65mg's of dextropropoxyphene hydrochloride per pill. Ive never seen the 642 tab's or have even heard of anyone being prescribed them.

So hopefully canada will follow and just take the shit off the market. Chances are if darvon kills your pain then 600mg's of ibuprofen would work a hell of alot better so there is absolutly no reason for it to be on the market at all. It never ceases to amaze me just how fucking stupid doctors are :p

Wow, FINALLY. The less shite pk's out on the market, the less chance of accidental od's, I say. I got basically given a bottle of 250 darv's and they do NOTHING. No wonder so many people have croaked. Crap. Now if doctor's would just listen to their patients...:!
