FDA pulls Darvon painkiller due to safety risks

Ive had just as postive effects from tramadol as I have from heroin, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and hydromorphone. It certainly is not anywhere near the level of shittiness as Dextropropoxyphene. tramadol also has a longer duration that all of the above opiates, which imo is a plus. Helps keep the euphoria alive a bit longer.

and btw, I'm far from an naive opiate user. I've been using various opiates for years now, usually with an average of 3-4 times a month, though I usually binge when I do use.

^^Glad it works for you. Always been bullshit for me, even in the days before i was hooked on dope and only did like a oxy 80 a day.

I can imagine if you have a serious tolerance (regular user) tramadol being useless, especially with the lowering of the seizure threshold. I tried not to go over 600mg and that was pushing it (I had xanax and Valium on hand). My opiate tolerance atm is ~40mg oxy to nod, ~60mg of hydrocodone to nod, and I got get myself to nod on tramadol around 400-500mg (granted this was based on 10 months ago, but like I said, I use opiates 3-4 a month). The most I've taken of tramadol was 600mg, and that was fantastic. I would sit down and just drift in and out, but when ever I would be working on something (even sitting) I would get a bit of simulation. Weird little drug. Hopefully I'll be getting some in the next few month

Fuck that, yo. They both suck ass. I could never understand the people who claim to get high off tramadol or get any kind of anything at all from it. The shit is garbage, just like darvocet. I wish they would get the fuck rid of all these crappy half-ass excuses for opiates that dont really do jack shit for anybody except maybe a little bit for the opiate-naieve. It would be nice if there was no more of these crap-ass drugs for doctors to give in place of the ones that really work. then maybe they would be forced to actually use shit thats effective for once instead of offering patients these pathetic excuses for painkillers.

Well, my belief is that there must be some genetic predisposition for enjoying tramadol, because out of all the opiates I've tried (heroin included), tramadol is my favorite for casual usage. Obviously, there are stronger and more incapacitatingly euphoric ones, but I like how tramadol doesn't get in the way of my sensorium - it lets me think critically while at the same time providing a nice, light high, and the SNRI effects provide a slight stimulation that allows me to get shit done. Tramadol is basically my favorite drug.

And many people have nearly zero positive effects from it - my buddy on here ebola? is a good example. I really think there's some kind of genetic thing going on here (as well as a tolerance / experience factor - I have not often used stronger opiates), because I find tramadol absolutely stunning, while many consider it garbage. Your mileage may vary (drastically, it seems).

THANK YOU! Jesus, finally, 45 minute barely effective bullshit, christ it is about time!

Propoxyphene Withdrawan from US Market

forgot to post this the other day when i was reading my emails, sorry if it's been posted.

November 19, 2010 — The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked that propoxyphene, sold under the brand names Darvon and Darvocet by Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, be removed from the US market. The decision will also affect generic manufacturers and the makers of propoxyphene-containing products.

New clinical data showing that the drug puts patients at risk for potentially serious or even fatal heart rhythm abnormalities has prompted regulators to act. An estimated 10 million patients have used these products.

At a press conference today, John Jenkins, MD, director of the Office of New Drugs, said the new numbers tipped the risk–benefit ratio against the drug.
The withdrawal will include brand name, generic, and all propoxyphene-containing products.

"For the first time, we now have data showing that the standard therapeutic dose of propoxyphene can be harmful to the heart," said Gerald Dal Pan, MD, director of the Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology.

The FDA is advising healthcare professionals stop prescribing propoxyphene. Patients who are currently taking the drug should not abruptly halt their medication but should contact their physician as soon as possible to discuss switching to another pain-management therapy.

"Long-time users of the drug need to know that these changes to the heart's electrical activity are not cumulative," Dr. Dal Pan added. "Once patients stop taking propoxyphene, the risk will go away."

Propoxyphene is an opioid typically used to treat mild to moderate pain. It was first approved by the FDA in 1957. It is sold by prescription under various names alone or in combination with acetaminophen. Since 1978, the FDA has received 2 requests to remove propoxyphene from the market.

In January 2009, an FDA advisory committee voted 14 to 12 against the continued marketing of propoxyphene products. At that time, the committee called for additional information about the drug's cardiac effects.

For the record, ibuprofen fucks with the stomach and kidneys, not so much the liver (that would be APAP). Yeah, Darvon sucks. I actually saw a script come in for it the day after it was pulled and our computer blocked it. Good times.

I just got prescribed vicodin and ibuprofen 800 for my foot injury. But I cant even take the ibuprofen, the lower doses doesnt even help my headaches, and the 800 doesnt help my pain, it just makes me very sick to my stomach. so instead of taking them at the same time like Im suppose to for pain, Im just taking a pill and a half of Vicodin when I need it.

I had a friend hand me a pill yesterday telling me to try it for pain, so I came home and looked it up and its Darvocet. Are they selling these again? or is it possible that someone gave it to him knowing it was shit?

They aren't selling them again. I'm sure it's just an old pill. They are garbage (IMO) but they do work and some people swear by them.

I've got 500 in my medicine cabinet so I'm sure others have 'em around as well.

Darvocet always worked great for me & I never needed more than 1.5 pills a day for back pain. I also liked that it wasnt addicting, at least to me it wasnt but was glad they took it off the market because of health risks.
