The Food and Drug Administration is considering restricting or even possibly banning menthol cigarettes. Public health advocates are pushing for this, saying menthol makes cigarettes more addictive and makes it easier for young people to start smoking. But opponents argue there's no evidence that menthol is bad and even some evidence it may be less risky. They also worry about creating a dangerous black market for menthol cigarettes, especially in African American communities, where menthol is most popular.

Lets ban banning things. There was a king of the hill where the town banned transfats and ppl started illegal lunch trucks that had the transfat laced food and all the other food outlawed. As dale said " i hate raw oysters but now that they are illegal i want one more than ever!" Lol makes sense to me. I cant stand menthols to begin with, if i need a cig id smoke one but they are nasty. I could see all of dc and bmore rioting if that happened lol.

Personally I hate menthols but this is outragous. Lol
What a joke the fda is.

They also worry about creating a dangerous black market for menthol cigarettes, especially in African American communities, where menthol is most popular.

For some reason this comes off as extremely racist to me.

personally I love menthols and I find this outrageous

and don't let the FDA fool you. if they were really worried about banning nicotine-laced products that enticed young people they would ban all that SNUS type of shit that Camel and other brands churn out

I'm perfectly comfortable with tobacco regulation, especially for additives that make smoking MORE addictive. In Australia, in the months before plain packaging legislation came into effect, the tobacco companies started promoting cigarettes with a ball of extra strong menthol in the butt that you had to crack to release the "ice fresh" addictive properties of a nicotine/menthol rush. They were really fucking intense. It was a shamelessly transparent attempt to get as many kids as hooked as possible before the parasites were forced to conform with the new laws that were designed to reduce the uptake of smoking in young people. The people who market this kind of shit (especially those who market extra-addictive smoking to black communities - now THAT is racist) are the lowest of the low and, short of having them publicly flogged and hanged, regulating the shit out of their ability to more effectively market death and addiction is the best way forward.

Only menthol smoking person I have seen was a Benson & Hedges (VERY expensive cigs in my province in canada, and my province has the less costly cigs of them all) smoking girl outside in college who was as white as bread and as preppy as possible. I bummed one from her once and and it was like ewwww...but I didn't say so. Then I gave her a dollar because of how much it seemed to have pissed her off to give me one. Just say no or something?

I don't see the racism or addictiveness increasing of menthols. In most cases I think they're made so you smoke LESS because they taste like tobacco and 20 sticks of Ice Cold whatever packs of gum. I just vape my e-cig now it's been 6 months woohoo. Everytime i'm with people who smoke cigs I'm like ugh, damn it smells bad. I now understand. But how come before you ever smoked the smell doesn't piss you off as much as when you stopped smoking? Weird huh? But I'm not like these snobby ex smokers who act all outraged by somebody smoking though. Fuck you, did everybody do this to you when YOU smoked?

After 6 months sometimes I still cough out greyish stuff, it's rare, but yeah 9 years of weed everyday + 7 of cigs everyday was bad. Now my throat is the problem, ciliary (small hair inside my larynx that produce mucus to help clean out the lungs (they grow back in the lungs too) and I spit more than I used to when smoking, what I spit is completely white but it's always being produced in my nose or in my throat, very sticky and difficult to get rid of. I'm on an antihistamine everyday to help sleep/make my suboxone feel stronger so I don't abuse it called hydroxyzine, it's a VERY sleepy kind of antihistamine, the old school ones, now the new school antihistamines, you can't get a script for, which sucks hardcore, because I need loratadine or dexloratadine during the day when I'm out of hydroxyzine.

In a nutshell, even after you quit smoking, you'll have lung, throat, nose issues for months up to a year even, that's what the nurses at my suboxone clinic say anyway, doctors are more surprised when I say after 6 months I still am a mucus factory though. But gone are the chest pains, the "lungs are cleaning up" chest pains, holy shit these are horrible, after 3 months they were gone, but they felt as bad as panic attacks chest tightening. Had to keep repeating in my head "this is my ciliary hair growing back" to get through it, oh and benzos help too ;)

The first time I had a menthol cigarette I was about 16 and really stoned. I thought it was a regular cigarette and lit it up.

It seriously took me about ten minutes to figure out WTF was going on in my mouth.

Menthols are popular in my area, I smoke them myself. They dont even taste remotely minty anymore, but suggesting people start smoking because menthol cigarettes exist is stupid. I'm sure I read somewhere that menthols were less unhealthy too?

A lot of people smoke them around me but they mainly smoke Newports, Marlboro menthols, Parliment menthols, salem, and I've met a few people who smoked camel menthols.
