Favourite song lyrics

yeah we dont want everyone on a downer at the same time. Ah fuck im all mixed up now, that song has opened up old wounds and shit like that, but im kind of addicted to it, i love it, but it crushes me, hopefully Thursdays counselling session will get to the bottom of this, im gonna be going at the noids to try to get some fuckin insight into what is going on here.

The optimism that despite all the things that might have passed us by, the sun is still shining, i think he had to finish the song like that, otherwise every sad soul that heard the song would be in a fuckin bad way.

Is it simply that it is an overpoweringly melancholic song, or is it because i last listened to it during quite an unhappy period of my life, i dont fucking know. If someone had a tendenecy to depression you wouldnt recommend them to listen to Leonard Cohen or Joy Division/New order really would you. Over the last couple of years i have generally been listening to much more upbeat music, so this has kind of knocked me sideways a bit.

I don't know; sometimes the catharsis from listening to music like that can have a healing / cleansing effect. It also depends on your sense of humour. Plus music is entirely subjective; a lot of the most upbeat ditties can be truly depressing for many.

There's the old joke about The Marble Index by Nico: if you feel like listening to The Marble Index then you probably shouldn't be listening to it. Which is amusing enough, but that record has certainly helped me through some bad times.

I wouldn't worry about it, MDB.

"Hello, hello?
Can you hear me?
I can be your China Doll,
if you'd like to see me fall.
Oh, you're so dope.
Your love is deadly.
They tell me life is beautiful,
They all think I have it all.
But I'm nothing without you.
All my dreams and all the lights mean
nothing without you."

Well, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Come on Wall Street, don't be slow,
Why man, this is war au-go-go
There's plenty good money to be made
By supplying the Army with the tools of its trade,
But just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
They drop it on the Viet Cong.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Well, come on generals, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last.
Now you can go out and get those reds
'Cause the only good commie is the one that's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Come on mothers throughout the land,
Pack your boys off to Vietnam.
Come on fathers, and don't hesitate
To send your sons off before it's too late.
And you can be the first ones in your block
To have your boy come home in a box.

And it's one, two, three
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven,

What did you learn in school today
Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today
Dear little boy of mine?

I learned that Washington never told a lie
I learned that soldiers seldom die
I learned that everybody's free
And that's what the teacher said to me

That's what I learned in school today
That's what I learned in school

What did you learn in school today
Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today
Dear little boy of mine?

I learned that policemen are my friends
I learned that justice never ends
I learned that murderers die for their crimes
Even if we make a mistake sometimes

That's what I learned in school today
That's what I learned in school

What did you learn in school today
Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today
Dear little boy of mine?

I learned our government must be strong
It's always right and never wrong
Our leaders are the finest men
And we elect them again and again

That's what I learned in school today
That's what I learned in school

What did you learn in school today
Dear little boy of mine?
What did you learn in school today
Dear little boy of mine?

I learned that war is not so bad
I learned about the great ones we have had
We fought in Germany and in France
And someday I might get my chance

That's what I learned in school today
That's what I learned in school

Dress Lyrics
Artist: P.J. Harvey (Buy P.J. Harvey CDs)

Put on that dress
I'm going out dancing
Starting off red
Clean and sparkling he'll see me
Music playing make it dreamy for dancing
Must be a way that i can dress to please him
It's hard to walk in the dress, it's not easy
I'm spilling over like a heavy loaded fruit tree

If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on

It's sad to see
Lonely all this lonely
Close up my eyes
Dreamy dreamy music make it be alright
Music play make it good for romacing
Must be a way I can dress to please him
Swing and sway everything'll alright
But it's feeling so damn tight tonight

If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on

"You purdy thang,"
My man says, "But I bought you beautiful dresses."

"You purdy thang,"
My man says, "But I bought you beautiful dresses."

Filthy tight, the dress is filthy
I'm falling flat and my arms are empty
Clear the way better get it out of this room
A falling woman in dancing costume

If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on

Artist Bob Dylan
A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
And where have you been my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard

And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard rain's you gonna fall.

Oh, what did you see, my blue eyed son?
And what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin'
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin'
I saw a white ladder all covered with water
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children

And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin'
I heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
I heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin'
I heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin'
I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin'
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley

And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, what did you meet my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony
I met a white man who walked a black dog
I met a young woman whose body was burning
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow
I met one man who was wounded in love
I met another man who was wounded in hatred

And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

And what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
And what'll you do now my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin'
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest dark forest
Where the people are a many and their hands are all empty
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten
Where black is the color, where none is the number
And I'll tell it and speak it and think it and breathe it
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin'
But I'll know my songs well before I start singin'

And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Its the sheer imagination and totally random creative genius of Bob Dylan's lyrics that make him head and shoulders above the rest in terms of lyric writing IMO. Hes been so prolific too, 35 studio albums, 58 singles, 11 live albums, 10 albums comprising The Bootleg Series, and 30 compilation albums ! Unbeleivable ! OK they might not all have been brilliant, but his ratio of classics to duds is extremely good.

Hey Sammy G, before I forget thanks for your choice of avatar. I shamefully went all these years never having listened to black flag but finally gave My war a play for the first time a couple of weeks back. Best album i heard in fucking ages!

I never noticed their lyrics were so good before. It was just about the music at the time.

That's quite uncanny you being reminded of that. I was about to put a line from "pocket knife" alongside the frank black lyric.

"White material will stain,
my pocket knife's got a shiny blade"

Massive PJ Harvey fan.

I think this lady can write some music
Joni Mitchell

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds * that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now

From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As ev'ry fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
