favourite movie theatres?

inspired by a question from tribal girl in another thread, where are your favourite places to see movies?

my favourite movie theatre ever used to be the marble arch odeon - the largest cinema screen in europe so i'm told. it was the perfect place to see huge blockbusters as they were intended to be seen. they've done some rebuilding inside and now the main auditorium feels very claustrophobic.

i'm also a big fan of the empire in leicester square.

it's huge! over 1300 seats in the main auditorium. mega-comfy seats and an ear-bleedingly loud sound system make for a great place to see movies as intended. i saw event horizon there in an almost empty theatre and it was terrifying.

for a more intimate setting i really like the curzon mayfair

that is incredible, i have never been to a movie theater such as that. the best it gets here in florida is to be lucky enough to have it at IMAX
 
fuck i miss going to the movie threatre when i was in my early teen years. The main sydney cinemas (george street) had a bit of class when they were three competing cinema chains and ushers tore tickets at the door. sure the rooms were older and the chairs slightly less comfortable but they had atmosphere and style.

now the places are as sterile as hospitals and as inspiring as box factories.

as mentioned in the other thread, i'll be seeing inland empire in sydney's state theatre from the messanine level tomorrow night.

i took a lot of acid here for the pink floyd experience show a few years back. whoah.
 
sydney's other best kept secret is govinda's vegan buffet/movie theatre.

Twice, every afternoon/night, they put on an all you can eat vegan meal followed by a film played in their specially made lounge filled cinema

fuck yeah.. the IMAX rulz!! cant wait to watch TRANSFORMERS on that beast, and Harry Potter (last 20min of the movie is 3D)

and i saw the pink floyd laser show here, rolling balls several years ago. very nice!
 
Not quite as pretty as some, but still aesthetically pleasing: the Embassy Theatre in Wellington. Looks good, has a fuck-off great screen, nice sound system, etc. But mainly shows big Hollywood blockbusters (admittedly, they do look good). I'm mostly there for the film festival.

My other favourite is the Paramount, which isn't anything special physically but screens loads of indie/festival films, plus hosts a 24 hour marathon of trash/pulp/b-grade films every year. Nothing like wandering in and out of the auditorium or standing on the balcony watching the city nightlife peak and then disappear as the sun comes up, all the while smashed on party pills :D

Uptown Theater in DC. Can't find a picture of the inside, but it's got a big ol' screen.
 
I can't find any pictures of it but the Tivoli Manor Square theater in Kansas City is by far my favorite theater. The seats are uncomfortable, there's no stadium seating, and the screens are relatively small but its selection of art films plus its charm make up for their "shortcomings" completely. It helps that I'm a Didionesque traditionalist.
 
the oxford theatre in halifax, nova scotia has a nice nostalgic feel to it but i prefer sight and sound over classy curtains.

i like going to my local cineplex. just the right size of screen and not too loud. they built a new one in the neighbouring town and it's so fucking LOUD that hearing a gunshot on screen is like someone sitting next to you were firing.

i love sitting right in the middle of the IMAX, i get goosebumps from just the cheap system introduction unchanged since the 1980... it's also fun to visit the omnimax every once in a while:

for the uninitiated, omnimax is like imax squared ;) there are two in my area so seats are always available. i love going to the cinema :)
