Okay, so the dates are arbitrary. I want to hear some of your favorite early rock songs. I don't know when it began or ended, but there is something brilliant about the first stages of rock in it's ability to really conjure up an era, ambiguous whilst also distinct.

Some artists would be Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers, Dion, The Four Seasons, Big Bopper, Buddy Holly and so on.

Love this tune. Bobby Darin- Dream Lover. Great, innocent lyrics, that melody, the chorus! A perfect slice of musical culture:

i enjoyed the bobby darin track, i am a sucker for sappy love songs

i like roy orbison, the shirelles, the ronettes

i like this recording, their voices really sound like angels

I am really into Roy Orbison, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly...
But this is arguably the first rock'n'roll song recorded.

I don't know much about these kids - nothing, actually - but this is such a killer little obscure rockabilly number that i thought i may as well post it here:

the Sonics are one of my favorite bands. they fit this early 60s rock n roll/soul mold you are casting... albeit perhaps a bit more on the rock n roll side ;)

yah man - I convinced my band to cover that one and we did it pretty well. my brother is a nasty blues guitarist. I love the simplicity/power of the percussion (w/ the Sonics)

I remember when I was a wee lad I came across their 1st two albums on vinyl and never have looked back since:

and iirc the Sonics toured for a year, last year or so? for dudes born in 1945 from the Pacific NW, that is one awesome feat

Some great tunes thus far. :)

I got two- this one I will embed cos its fucking quality- Brown Eyed Handsome Man, recorded by the First Geek, Buddy Holly... Fucking kick ass... Spring reverb, I can hear the bubbling.

But, is this the earliest rock song? 1944...

Fuck, one more. What a legend, Buddy Holly. Blows my mind really... Now, this tune- such brilliant backing vocals and a weird vocal-solo-bridge. :D

I wonder how often people get 'charged with unemployment' as the song's eponymous character is... I've never been a huge fan of Chuck Berry for some reason; I tend to prefer covers of his tunes, but I do think Johnny B. Goode kicks ass. :) So pure.

Wow - that is awesome! I've found a new musical obsession...plus she's playing the same model guitar as mine here! :)
Thanks for that, willow.

Now, where would this thread be without a little Phil Spector?
This is the first single he wrote/released, and yeah, that's the evil bastard on guitars and backing vocals.
"To know him is to love him" was a phrase taken from his father's tombstone. Pretty creepy, but what a pop song...
