Favorite Author?

Check out Choke. It's a good read and I think you'll like it. I don't often read books more than once, but this is one that I've enjoyed multiple times. Also the movie will be coming out in October, I'm super excited about it! :)

Out of curiosity, why have you judged him negatively? I think it's awesome that you're willing to give him a chance. I don't think I've really met anyone that has read his stuff, and hasn't liked it.

Spork, my reasons for judging him are totally stupid and silly but basically I judged him because I went to a hipster college with a bunch of hipster clones biking around, reading their Chuck P books and espousing his genius. I saw FAR TOO MANY people reading his work on the train and bus too, so he had to be bad or trite in my opinion. In general I am more a fan of the classics as opposed to modern writing ... I don't want to read "witty", hip tales by formerly depressed weirdo white guys (this is the sort of nonesense impression I created in my head of Palahniuk and his writing style, I have applied it to many other new, modern authors as well).8(

So basically I made bad (and stupid, silly) connotations with his name and began the judge parade and when I get that going, well I REALLY get going.

BUT I am tired of the game I have played involving poor Palahniuk's name and I am looking forward to reading his work. Since you recommended Choke that is the one I will request from my library, thanks!! =D

^ I know what you mean about Palahniuk as I also tend to be put off by a writer's trendiness. Then I read one of his books and decided that actually he really is a talented chap. I've only read Haunted so far and would highly recommend it - twisted, insightful and funny. What more could you want from a book :D.

Favourite authors in general? I wouldn't know where to start. If it's good then I like it :).

I think Survivor is Chuck P's best work, but Choke ain't far behind (read it before the movie comes out!).

My all-time favorite author would probably be Hermann Hesse, but I also quite like Vonnegut, Salinger, Kerouac, Burroughs, and Welles as far as more "classic" authors go. If we're talking sci fi/fantasy, then I'd go with George R.R. Martin, Stephenson, Jordan, and Gibson.

Does cognitive neuroscience count? ;)
I take that back. It's built on giving small numbers of college undergrads goofy tasks.

Hmm, this is a toughy.

I really appreciate Al-Hallaj. He is one of the "founding fathers" of Sufi thought, famous for two things: the phrase "I am the Truth!" and the fact that he was one of the only two or three people to be prosecuted by the Islamic empire due to their beliefs. If that were not enough, all his work, written in classical Arabic, is in rhyme and still makes perfect sense!

"[God] thew [man], all shackled up, in the sea and told him beware! beware of getting wet!"

I also like Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll). I find his syllogistic wordplay and his witty humour most delightful to read. My appreciation of this guy goes beyond the Alice books, btw.

"Twas brillig and the slithey toves
Were gyre and gimble in the wabe
All mimsey were the borogoves
And the momeraths outgrabe"

I love Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende, Erica Jong, Paolo Coehlo, Kahlil Gibran, D.H.Lawrence, Judy Blume, Charles Baudelaire, Joyce Carol Oates, Oscar Wilde, Anais Nin, Marguerite Duras, and Charles fuckin Bukowski :D

Heh...at Berkeley sociology, it seems more like, "Guess a goofy task that I might like" (yes, from on high).

mmm...Neal Stephenson's probably the fiction writer that I've dug the most.

ebola

I hate going with the standard Stephen King answer, because it makes me feel so uncultured when it comes to reading (no insult intended to those who listed him). But in all honesty, that pretty much sums me up. I never seem to set aside reading time, so it basically becomes an on-vacation, once a year event. Really sad, actually. I've read a lot of books which I enjoyed more than his, but they were by single random authors, so I couldn't really name one as a "favorite." So it just kind of ends up that if I want something interesting to hold my attention, I go to the King section and pick one. There's usually a lot I can criticize as far as content, but I can't really think of any books he's written which I've quit before getting to the end, so that's gotta count for something!
