Fasting Megathread

^ As far as I'm aware, insulin resistance = diabetes. I could be wayyyy off, but that's what I think it means, 'cause when you get diabetes, it's 'cause your cells are, well, resistant to the insulin your body is producing.

Yeah, when I first went Vegetarian I was eating a lot of fake burgers and products like that--It didn't effect my mom's grocery bill *that* much 'cause she didn't have to buy hamburgers and whatnot for me anymore. When I first went Vegan I did eat a lot of soy, but now I eat mostly fruits, vegetables, and grains, so my grocery bill is actually a lot cheaper than it ever was. It's about $50 for a week and a half, and even then I do have enough food at the end of that week and a half to eat for a few more days.

Totally easy trap to fall into! It's no different than having the SAD. Overly processed food made up of mostly chemicals is no good for you whether it's Vegetarian or not.

She is greatly apposed to any deviation from the SAD (Standard American Diet). I went Vegetarian and she was pretty pissed but wrote it off as a fad. Five years later when I went Vegan, she wrote it off as a fad. If I dared utter the word "fasting," she'd probably want to get me mentally evaluated. I live with my mother in case you haven't caught on, lol.

But yeah, that's why I'm gonna plan it for a time when I don't have school and when she's gone.

And hey, the worst that happens is after a day (or a couple hours, lmao) without food, I start feeling shitty, so I eat something. *Shrug* Can always try again. If I never try, I'll never know.

Ugh, what a nightmare. Does she realize the SAD leads to a number of health problems and feeling shitty in general? I think the worst part about people like this is that they usually don't even realize it's possible to feel better. You don't know how many times I've heard people complain about weight gain, feeling shitty, not sleeping well, bad skin, blood sugar stuff, etc etc and then when I suggest diet changes have them respond with: "I don't need to change my diet, I feel fine!" 8) They think feeling like shit is NORMAL.

True, but I do suggest the proper preparation and the determination to follow it through.

Yeah, plan on following through. Because you are likely to feel crappy at some point during the fast, most likely the first three days or so. The enlightening, cool mental and physical effects don't show up until after the initial detox usually, but as with anything ymmv.

i fasted yesterday using the lemon juice, maple syrup and cayanne (master cleanse) method. i intended to do it for 3 days but i had the same reaction, even throughout the day i was weak and my vision was getting messed up (lots of 'stars' and darkening of vision). i have hypoglycemia and i think that was a huge part of it. do you have these symptoms if you dont eat for a while anyway? if so you probably have hypoglycemia. personally, i dont think straight up fasting is good for my body, a juice fast or something might be better. ymmv
I don't know if I have hypoglycemia, but today I had moments of the darkening vision and got stars or "cross-eyed vision" every once in awhile. It passed quickly and only happened once or twice.

A couple years ago I did the lemon juice/cayenne/maple syrup for two weeks. Amazing mental clarity, more free time when you aren't preparing 6 meals a day, greatly improved memory.
My memory has been shit today--I even left the lights on in my car causing the battery to die! But, that has happened before... Lol.

When I woke up this morning, I had the most unpleasant and unusual taste in my mouth. Almost metallic but not quite. Totally made me not want to eat anything this morning. So I didn't. When I got hungry around 10a, I knew if I ate then, I'd be hungry around noon and again around two... And I didn't have enough food for all that eating. So, when I got hungry at ten, I told myself "Just last 'til 11." At 11, "just last 'til 12." I've gone all day so far (it's 5p) without food. I don't feel very good, though I don't feel bad--Just a bit cold (I'm always cold though) and weak. I'm going to see if I can make it through tomorrow with everything I need to do--If not, I'll eat something light. The main reason I want to stick with this? I've been over eating lately and I think this will be great to get me back on track with getting me down to 120 again (I gained 10 pounds when I stopped smoking). I'm not doing this for weight loss, but to jump start it. Waking up after "binging" with a horrible taste in my mouth wasn't cool. Yes, I brushed my teeth after eating. I didn't really "binge," but for me, I did. I had three or four pieces of fruit around 8p, then while cleaning up the kitchen, I ate about two cups of (cold, plain) pasta. I need to get these urges to eat uncontrollably under control--I did not need the pasta, but I wanted it.

/Rambling. Wish me luck for tomorrow! :) The biggest issue I foresee is having all this time not spent preparing food, lol.

Edit: Yeah, I caved. Oh well! Now I know it is possible for me to fast without ripping someones head off.

Does any one believe in them"clays"what can get rid of heavy metals ?I have forgot the name of them.

Bentonite clay?

I've used it but I'm not sure it's effect on metals. If you're looking to chelate metals I've heard cilantro is actually very helpful. Maybe you could juice fast and add cilantro to some of the juices? Not sure if you can juice it, I've never done that. What makes you suspect metal? Do you have fillings?

No I have just read about a supplment and it said it gets rid of heavy metals and how its suposed to be good to do a proper detox like twice a year.
I have wanted to detox for a while the only time I have tried though was just with water and I didnt notice anything

Hey guys - I read today that all-water fasts are just ridiculous and should never be done.... But before, I read that they are fine and great. What? Everything I read is contradictory on the issue. What do?

I really want to do a pure water fast.

There will always be people who say [insert whatever cleanse, alternative health thing here] are "ridiculous". I don't know if I'd want to do a water fast, maybe for a day or something. But to call it ridiculous isn't fair, as different people have different needs. I know people who's health got a major restart from water fasting. I also know people who had their hair fall out and other health problems. The important thing is to go slow with this stuff... jumping from a standard american diet (not saying you eat such a diet) directly to a three week long juice fast, for example, would send most people into a healing crisis so bad they might think they were dying and check themselves into a hospital... but someone on a raw diet who did a juice fast might find it easy and have excellent results...

Go slow and listen to your body and trust your instincts.

I totally agree with that: You *think* you can't. I didn't think I could either. I didn't think I could go more than three hours without food (or without knowing food was coming shortly). I went almost 24 hours the other day. Had dinner on Tuesday around 6 or 7, woke up Wednesday and didn't eat 'til around 6 or 7. It's doable. :)

It's a test of your will, for sure. But it's also a learned skill.

By the end of my last fast I was feeling so great I honestly wondered if I'd ever want food again. I wanted to want food as I love food, but it took a few days for my appetite to ever return.

^ Yeah, I had a friend warn me about fasting because she's aware of my addictive tendencies and my food issues of the past... But, I don't think I'll have an issue going back to food when I do the fast in Jan. And even if I do, I'm going to have to eat once my mom gets home, lol.

I think it also might be a good idea to eat light, like big raw salads and stuff, for a few days before the fast begins. Ease into it.

I really want a juicer, damn it. I'd love for my next fast to be green juice based. (kale, cucumber, etc)

^ Yeah, that's a very good idea!

I have also realized that eating less and less has made me less hungry every day, little by little. I started worrying that I might be gorging myself without realizing it - you know, like selective memory loss or blacking out or something! Hehe.

It's obviously not happening, but that's how incredible it is. I used to eat three huge meals, sandwiches, snacks, sweets, chips, everything I could lay my hands on and more - and I still got ravenous between these big meals and frequent snacks.

Now, I have two tiny meals and some fruit in between and am not even hungry anymore.
