Fake Casio F-91 watches being widely sold on Ebay!?

I'm a big fan of these watches, and have been buying them since they first came out in the 1980s. I've lost my last one, although I've recently noticed that the alarm goes off briefly at a very early time in the morning. It's not been easy to find the watch by it's beeps, as they are fading, and only lasting a short time. It took day 2 to get the exact time the alarm goes off, day 3 I couldn't quite get the location of the watch. But I ruled out the possibility of it being in any other rooms. It must be in one room. So the next time I'm up that early, getting ready for work, I'll be ready in the middle of the room, intent to find where those faint and brief beeps are coming from.

Anyway, back on topic, I recently bought a slightly discounted one off Ebay. When I received the watch I immediately thought that the watches numerical display looked weird. The font on the numbers was a lot thicker than on any I'd previously owned. Plus the watch strap broke clean off after only one month of use, and considering all previous watches of this type had straps that lasted around 7 years on average, IIRC, I'd say given all these faults, that this watch was probably a cheap fake.

It was interesting reading the many comments on this seller selling these watches, with many people mentioning the poor straps. And others mentioning the apparent widespread sale of fake Casio F91s on Ebay. One guy said he;d had 2 successive watch faces fail on him after only one month each! I'd only used Ebay because Argos was completely out of stock, in every single branch of the country, about a month ago! I'd just quickly ordered a new watch off Ebay because I needed one quickly, and didn't stop to think, or make time to research anything about those watches being sold online.

Anyway, I told the seller what had happened, and he immediately issued a full refund. So that was great that there was no hassles with that. Legal sellers are so much easier to deal with than black market vendors. So it was a pleasant change and a nice surprise to get an immediate and full refund.

Which has helped me get a replacement from Argos, where I'm certain the watch will be the genuine article, because they are now fully back in stock, and one is available immediately, at my nearest branch. :)

So lesson learnt, or reminded, about dodgy fakes being sold online. I think it's the first time I've received what I'm pretty sure was a fake item. Most of the stuff I buy online, doesn't often get faked. (I mean non substance related stuff here, and I'm not including the several times that I have been sent fake benzos of various types, before eventually finding, through the 'grapevine', vendors with genuine products of the type I wanted, at the best prices I have seen.)

But at least the seller of the watch immediatly issued a no quibbles refund, without any quibles or hassles!

tl;dr this post will probably be very boring for anyone not interested in the Casio F91.

For any that are, would you agree that it's a classic? Is elegentaly non flashy and non 'showoffy', fits skinny wrists perfectly, and the genuine models are incredibly long lasting and durable. Reportedly they were the type of watch that Al-quaida used on their bombs, because they are so reliable, accurate, and robust! I find it amusing that 'hipsters' started "wearing the watch ironically", and then they started wearing it unironically, presumably when they realised it's many positive attributes :\

Anyway, I don't care if the watch became hip because of it's 'retro vibe', and was somehow ironic to the hipsters, and I don't care if it's now become passé. I don;t know it's current hipster stratus, and really could not care less. That's certainly not why I use this watch!.

Plus It's great to be quite immune to the 'forces of consumerism.' This watch is just an icon of form, it's robust and durable, has simple but pleasing aesthetics. also great reliability, , elegance, functionality, longevity, (I own some of these watch faces that are still going strong after 10 years or more, the straps broke, but the time pieces seem to keep going forever, on the same battery. ) and perhaps above everything else, frugality, and value for money.. It totally fucked off the whole notion, and need, to own expensive watches, due to whatever force drives people to do that.

Does anyone else like the Casio F-91W?

It is by very far, and many many times over, the best selling watch in the world. And has been for some time, For very good reason. The design was so good, it has barely changed since it's original release in the mid 1980s, IIRC.

Yes, but I never owned one.

I graduated from Swatch -which used to be fun in the '80s and '90s, to Casio G-shock, which can also come into the hot tub and jacuzzi with me or to the beach if I want to go swimming. Excellent if my lover wants us to go to the gay sauna, but he or I needs to be back at a certain time.

Yeah the G-Shock seems to be "in" at the moment.

It is a good looking and sturdy watch, but because it's so big and chunky it really belongs on thick wrists.

It also costs more than 7 times the value of the F91, so is obviously a completely different price range.

I need a watch with which I can swim.

The F91s are "water resistant."

I'm not quite sure if they'd survive regular swims tbh, but I guess that they would.

I see myself dive into a Hollywood Hills swimming pool during an A-lister party with my clothes on during an altercation with Will Smith. Shame my other stuff would likely not survive it.

Seriously, I wash dishes in Amsterdam for a living.
