exposure to stainless steel implant causing metal toxicity?

I know there's been one study after the next supposedly debunking the contention that the mercury in vaccines can cause autism.

That being said - from what I understand, mercury has since been removed as a base from vaccines none the less.

I ask because - I came on this forum - pffff, years ago - asking about one drug after the next after the next - basically tried them all;

And found - they've masked some symptoms fairly okay, and provided relief in some sense.
They've also reinstated a degree of cognizance that has been absent since the onset of my symptoms about 13 years ago.

And my deduction at this point is that - these depressive like symptoms, cognitive dissonance, appetite loss, insomnia, social withdrawal and autism like social functioning;

They all came around almost immediately after I had a piece of stainless steel surgically implanted in my jaw to realign it, after a sporting injury in Thailand said 13 years previous.

I contacted the hospital recently to determine the exact nature of the material but - quelle surprise - "all records have been destroyed".

As unlikely as it may sound - it is possible that heavy metal leakage may introduce factors into the blood stream that would interact neurally and precipitate effective function, cognitive and personality changes - similar to, but whose origin differs from, that seen in mental illness?

To put this in perspective - I've seen, a lot of doctors - but 5 consultant psychs.

Not one - ever, concluded that I was mentally ill - regardless of my complaints of fatigue, social withdrawal etc.

No diagnosis of mental illness was ever given.

This metal/steel implant interaction yielding these symptoms - as unlikely as it may be deemed - chemically, neurologically - it's possible?

And in what way may it transpire?
What factors introduced, what proteins or gene expression it may inhibit etc?

Mercury was never used as a "base" for vaccines, it was a preservative, and used in minute quantities in a form easily eliminated from the body (thimerosal -> ethylmercury)

And medical grade stainless doesn't have appreciable levels of heavy metal either - at least not in a bioavailable form. 316L steel is mostly iron with chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, all in zero-valence form (i.e. as a pure element). Even if it did leach the rate of dissolution would be miniscule(ref).

You'd probably also expect to see at least a few instances in the medical literature of mental dysfunction from steel implants.

From a purely pragmatic viewpoint, if you're being exposed to something leaching from stainless steel, cookware is probably the biggest source of exposure. Making tomato sauce for pasta? You're exposing the steel to a chelating organic acid (citric/tartaric), plus chloride from salt (a known corrosion promoter) at elevated temperatures... compare a chunk of steel in a bone at ~37C with neutral to alkaline pH, not even in full contact with blood (scar tissue etc in the way). It's day and night difference.

P.s. I edited your post title as it's not really a question about vaccines nor mercury.

It is far more likely that any sporting injury that involves enough damage to the head to necessitate a steel implant would also involve mild traumatic brain injury, than it would be for you to get some sort of heavy metal poisoning from the surgical stainless steel (not that traumatic brain injury is actually required for someone to suffer mental health issues).

The whole point of stainless steel is that it doesn't just dissolve / leach into your body at an appreciable rate. Even if it did, iron, chromium, nickel and molybdenum are all present in a living human body anyway, as they are essential micronutrients.

Re: thimerosal: As sekio said, it's only a preservative. People regularly ingest minor amounts of mercury anyway (especially if they eat lots of seafood), so it is not like the tiny amount contained in a vaccination shot represents an extreme dose.
Yeah, it was eventually replaced by a mercury-free preservative, but that does not indicate that thimerosal was present in toxic levels before.
Getting a vaccination shot is safer for your brain than going unvaccinated in any case (measles, for example, are known to cause massive neurological damage in children if the infection hits them hard); getting a vaccine with an organomercury preservative in it is safer than injecting an unpreserved vaccine that has a small chance of being contaminated by bacteria; getting a vaccine with a mercury-free preservative in it may be *ever so slightly* safer than getting a vaccine preserved with thimerosal if you are being exposed to an above-average dose of mercury from your diet.

I'm interested by this; I've got an implant in my left ankle (metal) and I Wonder if when the body is into heavy locomotion (creating lactic acid) during a night out for example, if there can be any decomposition of the implant and therefore toxicity?

Pretty much the response I anticipated - and that's not to say it's not welcome.

I'm glad I got responses.

However - there have been numerous cases of symptoms similar to my own, caused by metal fillings.

I mean - who's to know?

Hopefully I'll be getting them out in about a month or so and - then I'll know for sure in the subsequent weeks but - there's no doubt - time of that surgery, was the exact time these symptoms came on.

As to head injury - there's been studies into head trauma and hormone dysregulation that causes again, similar symptoms.
I've been tested extensively in this area and - it's not an issue.

The other factor to consider is - according to some prof who makes a living with these implants, whom I saw last week - there's little in the way of blood tests that would show up poor compatibility with metal implants so, the only way to really know what's up - is to get it taken out - which is what I'm trying to do.

Failing that - I've exhausted all possibilities - save for ketamine - and whilst that may offer some "escapism" based respite (primarily from the mind numbing lack of functionality), I'd be skeptical of potential symptom amelioration by it.
But hey - I certainly intend to try it.

I just refuse to believe there's not a good explanation here - and via the timeliine, onset of symptoms, and particularly insidious nature of their onset - all fingers point to jaw fixation surgery, performed in a third world country, by a hospital who now refuse to disclose my medical records (and thus exact substance the implant is made from).

What I'd be subsequently curious about is - just as gut microbiome are now being studying in terms of their neural effects, personality effects, and effects on emotional process and thus overall function - I truly believe any foreign substance introduced to the body can also yield this affect - albeit thus far unspecifically characterized.

I think what I'm gonna do is have the implant analyzed when I get it taken out - and perhaps that will shed light a little better.

You are right. Some steels have minuscule amounts of manganese, and that could be a problem(maybe) - manganism. But the few steels that have Manganese as an alloy are usually industrial and tool steels. For the most part, most commercial steels have mostly chromium and vanadium as alloys, and those are not usually toxic in elemental form - unlike chromium in hexavalent form, which is a proven carcinogen.

But be it as it may, you cannot shield yourself completely from toxic things in the environment. They even found that the basements of most houses have some Radon gas trapped there. Not to mention that all of us are exposed to pico grams of Polonium in the air from the Chernobyl meltdown back in 1986. And Bisphenol-A leaching from plastic bottles into our food and water. And gamma rays constantly bombarding our bodies from supernovae explosions millions of light-years away. And infra-red rays from our Sun causing millions of skin cells of ours suffering mutations and becoming pre-cancerous each day. The human body can deal with chemical , biological and radioactive insults to some degree. Even taking an international plane trip bombards you with hundreds of times more X-rays than at sea level when you are 40,000 feet up in the air compared to sea level. And yet, some pilots fly at that altitude every day for 30 years and their rates of cancer are only marginally greater than that of the general population. The body has complex elimination processes, DNA-repair enzymes as well as incredibly potent antioxidant enzymes to deal with most toxic insults. Unless you make these insults chronic and intense, the body is set up to tolerate and deal with them.

For sustained exposure such as an implant?

Sounds like I'm trying to squash a square peg into a round hole but - the onset, was particularly insidious.

Initially, some affect, not too much.

Six months in - I'm feeling it.

1 year in - heavy toll.

3 years in - I'm totally bombed.

Felt like the body respond okay initially - and then slowly lost the ability to sustain a defense.

The hospital where the plate was implanted MUST supply the manufacturer of the medical device and also the model and lot numbers.
You should have been given this information right after the surgery. In the U.S. they can't destroy these records; not sure about the law in Thailand. Also your surgeon's office should be able to provide this information.
Many people have reactions to metal. Metal allergies are VERY common. The medical device manufacturers are doing everything in their power to suppress information which shows just how harmful implanted medical components may be. This is especially seen in the field of orthopedics.
You may wish to have your blood and urine tested for the presence of metal ions. You may also wish to be tested for metal allergies (MELISA Test). Keep in mind that the articles I'm referencing here pertain to Stainless Steel and other metals too. The ones containing cobalt are the most toxic. Stainless Steel used in surgical procedures should not contain cobalt.
Here are some links to journal articles and abstracts which you may find useful:

Even if the implant isn't THE cause of your problems it could be a contributing cause, I would also not trust that the implanted metal to be stainless steel if those that implanted it aren't competent enough to keep a record of what sort of device they placed in your body. I just did a cursory search concerning metal plates used in repairs of broken jaws. Titanium alloys were mentioned several times. Titanium alloys contain cobalt which has been shown to be highly toxic. I don't wish to alarm you. I'm just trying to provide information which may be helpful in your search for answers. This video is may be of interest. Keep in mind the people this surgeon is describing have been exposed to very high levels of cobalt.

Good luck.
