I'm sorry if this is the wrong section, because it isn't classed as a drug.

But i had a very strange experience with Olbas oil.

Today i have the worse cold ever, so i decide to start routing through my draws, and boom i find Olbas oil, i checked the bottle and seen that it was 4 and a half years out of date. But i decided there can't be anything harmful inside and it's just because everything is required to have a expiry date, so i had a couple sniffs up both of my nostrils, it stung my nose so much.

But a couple seconds later, i felt so relaxed and a tiny bit euphoric, it kinda felt like a small dose of ketamine, it lasted around 5minutes, i assure you there was no placebo, i definitely felt something.

It may be dangerous to my health so i'm probably not going to try it again.

Does anyone have any insight on this, i'm pretty confused how a herbal nasal decongestant could make me high?

Any information would be great, i am very curious on this subject.

The ingredients are as follows.

Cajuput Oil
Clove oil
Eucalyptus oil
Juniper berry oil
Levomenthol
Methyl salicylate
Mint oil
Partly dementholised

Thanks for your time

I just tried it again for you, and i am getting similar effects. my legs and arms feel numb and my head feels light and i feel a slight euphoric buzz, like i said this stuff is 4 and half years old. So i don't know, the bacteria or something inside could be making these effects, or maybe the ingredients have fermented and became potent.

Bacteria isn't going to be growing in there. It's a mixture of essential oils - most of which are pretty good antiseptics. It won't have spoiled, either, if it was in a sealed container. if it was exposed to air it may get a little thicker - which isn't harmful.

These are all mildly psychoactive. Clove oil, mint oil, methyl salicylate are all pretty strong decongestants, and can definitely give you a wierd feeling - probably havign to do with all the blood vessels in your head doing funny stuff, and your sinuses being unusually clear!

Don't take too much. The methyl salicylate breaks down to methanol and salicylic acid (a metabolite of aspirin), and also acts as a blood thinner. It's not good for you in excess - it can cause bleeding, possibly blindness and liver damage

Stick to no more than a few teaspoons a day. You'll be good.
