Expensive Rehabs That Spread Stigma, Not Recovery

I think the whole idea of the recovery community being exspected to be anonymous has done as much as anything to keep the stigmatism against addicts alive and well. Like so many contradictions, in the current mess that the recovery community seems to be cemented in, addiction being a disease that we should not be ashamed is in direct opposition to the fact that they require anonymous practices in its treatment. If we want to push towards getting rid of the damn stigmas then stop practicing them ourselves.

Sure medical records need to remain private so they aren't abused. But people that go into treatment for cancer dont find it necessary to only reveal their first name. Like this provides any real degree of protection anyway. People sit around in meetings and rehab and share all sorts of stuff about their lives. Many people drive to the meetings so liscense plates could easily be checked. It is encouraged at many meetings to give your phone numbers out to many people including strangers in the form of newcomers. So if anyone including law enforcement or whoever else they pretend this "anonymous" practice will conceal your identity from, could find out who you are with almost no trouble at all. It is likely still promoted out of tradition and in rehabs it likely causes us to further dissociation from who we were, when we arrived. They rarely allow us to continue to use a nickname and often promote the use of a formal less commonly used form of a persons name, possibly to create as much separation from who we were and who they are trying to create. It also likely promotes transformation into identifying with the new identity of the fellowships take of an addict.

The system tells people they must hide in anonymous fellowships and "protect" our identities from association with with addiction by using the incredibly powerful non disclosure of the last name plan, who claims its only requirement for membership is the desire to stop using drugs but in realty by design it one big push at all times for so much more, get a sponsor, work the steps, hit as many meetings as you can, read the literature, and much of all this is very manipulative and demanding, designed to change who you are and how you think, but its results are rather undynamic. this is likely the reason that so many strong fellowship people are spitting images of so many other strong fellowship people. healing ourselves by giving our will and life over to God, while we entrust that some higher power that we just made up and ordained on a whim ourselves will restore us to sanity, while we are also asking God to remove short comings and defects of character. We are people that go pay thousands of dollars to be required to ware degrading signs stating we are king babies w.. make time lines of every drug we have ever done and present them in front of many basically strangers who are now encouraged to be our new and only friends but can only trust enough to tell our first name, while having to attend meeting where were recite the same brain washing propaganda, constantly reminding us that "we didn't know how to live" and if we rebel against all the ridiculous shit we are being fed we will end up in jail, institutions or dead,

So we had better get fully with the program and obsessively adhere to "getting better", sit around the world in "the rooms' regurgitating the exact same stuff that is being regurgitated in thousands of rooms, to the point that many people who spend allot of time in the fellowships sound the exact same because they have been brain washed and now have a token fellowship saying that explains every situation in life, and I we think all this shit is bizarre enough possibly one of the most confusing fucked set ups we have ever seen, Imagine what it looks like to a person who has never faced addition and is already filed with all the misconceptions, lies, and propaganda that has been pumped through the media for decades. I we have a hard time understanding addition then they must just be baffled. Many have no idea that the drug war creates so many of the problems that are dumped on addicts. Many non addicts and non drug users are really in the dark when it comes to so much to do with drug use and addiction and so many are already filled with all the negative bulshit that has been thrown at them for years. So promoting the extreme bizarreness of the the fellowships as our primary solution can not help our image or the overwhelming majority of people fro whom its really unappealing or didn't work.

Its time to bring addiction treatment out of the dark ages in the us. Brain washing works for some people but its well past time for a large segment to scrap this approach and break down addition and address it in a modern scientific based approach. Addicts need to be taught what addition is. what its symptoms are. How to address these symptoms and why talking this approach works. Instead of being brainwashed we need to be educated, Instead of all of us being encouraged to attend meetings and talk our problems out, looking for solutions to everything in the most poorly worde manipulative 12 steps and trusting in god, we should be focusing much more on developing and implementing strong coping skills to deal with life in a more traditional approach. To much of many rehabs are designed at promoting the break down of the already pieced out addicts who land there. I think a big part of this is its allot easier and cheaper to break someone down and introduce them to an established brainwashing conformist religious cult like fellowship who has helped people but has not worked as far as peer edited studies have shown results that it did not work for 95% of the people who attempt this possible solution. than it is to addresses and treat the addiction properly.

The felowships are there for anyone to attemt for free why do we need rehabs so focused on this aspect. They should be doing other things.

We need to quit stigmatizing ourselves and come out of the "closet" so to speak.
We need the drug war ended and we need drug addition treated as medical issue and not a legal one.
We need the black market of drugs eliminated.
We have to get out of the stone age as far as recovery goes.
People need to be educated about the truth about drugs and addiction.
People need to understand what harm reduction is and why its so important.

Looking at what I feal would help I think we do a pretty god job at trying to do allot of this here on Bluelight:)

Sorry to anyone wo took the time to read this as it was a rambling rant. So much nonsense around this issue

. There was almost no scheduled free time, with groups and mutual-help meetings every night. Church attendance was also required, something that prior to admission the client had not been informed of.

The more free time the more people would retain their individuality. They also likely do this to limit any planing and descion making by the individual. Not so much time to think about what is going down and keeps a person immersed in the promotion.

“I thought I’d have some time to think. After all, I’m trying to make big changes in my life,” he said. “But they kept me so busy it was very hard to come to my own judgments about what I was hearing. Maybe that was the point, to prevent me from thinking?”

if people continue to think for themsefs it would be harder to get them to surrender, feal powerless, accept the unprovable ilogical show they are being immersed in and exspected to accept.

I lve that manipulative propaganda they throw at you, something like you... you have been doing all your own thinking and look where it got you, it time to try something different"

I think the rehabs in the US should take their own advice on this one.

Allowances might be made for these aspects of the facility if the treatment had been outstanding, but there were only one or two individual sessions per week, and the counselors were not professionally trained.

Despite all that busy-ness, my client said that almost no attention was paid to what he defined as his primary issue: developing a new direction in life after some recent major situational changes, which he had coped with by drinking rather than adapting. He left the rehab after a few days, furious about being misled and ignored. This experience left him uncertain that good substance-use treatment existed anywhere. Most disturbing, because early recovery is time of great vulnerability, a part of him believed that he actually deserved to be treated badly—that he deserved to be stigmatized. Fortunately he found the inner strength to keep looking for a different approach.

Dont worry the steps wil take care of that.. or there will be plenty of time to address that later.. you should use this time to focus on your "recovery"..
Much cheaper and easier to have faith that the fellowships and meetings as many meetings will provide the answer to this problem.. if not you are likely to become programed for awhile and then you can always just accept this as a permanent problem, and look at it as taking life on lifes terms.

They did not engage her, she said, because they were rote and repetitive.

Allot of places could care less about tailoring individual counseling.. Don't actually address the issues "surrender to your illness".. You are powerless ..more like just swallow the program we are feeding your and pray it works. focus on your "recovery" you can actually try and address this stuff later if the steps dont fix it.

But my client left feeling deeply confused about what recovery was really about, and more confused about herself than before her admission.

I think the reason they dont tell people what a rehab based twelve step recovery was is most people would be really turned off. Plus if they told you what they were trying to do Im not sure if it would take for anyone. I wouldnt be surprized if apsects of the fellowships were created to be confusing if not imposible to figure out or justify as this distrsacts people from what is hapening and helps hide some of the more baltent manipulatiions.

All that being said I received some real benefit from completing the steps.. I was able to go back in and clean out my psychological system from allot of issues I had'nt dealt with. I was mot able to stay clean the first time even though I threw myself into this mind altering machine. I did learn many things from the rehab I attended, continued to practice some of the fellowship principles even when I went back to useing, adn I did not undertake the steps when I finally addressed this well the last time but i do use principles and techniques that I picked up in both places in what I do today. I was never able to compleately buy into the fellowships and I think that is the only requirement for successful results from membership.

The bigest difrence for me this time was I used eerything I could find to combat the PAWS, to deal with tha addictions, and most important to find and address the roots. The root isues are what always caused me to relapse and they were the same damn things that I started useing drugs to deal with in the first place.

I would also like to say that in the american system our system is often divided into three parts.. in patient where I think we get the big imersion into the felowships and other things at good places.. then to IOP where if you get good counselors like I was fortuante to have last time allot of personal issues can be thoriwly adressed, and then Op.. which is pretty much just a place to hold you accountable for continuing with the meatings and such and can deal with a crises or two out a week.

Uhhhh rehab...I've been inpatient twice and outpatient once. All those experiences were horrible and really showed me the true nature of how addicts are seen as wastes of space and can only get better by letting ppl treat you like shit and also the whole god and na bullshit. The ppl that worked there treated all the patients like shit. The food was beyond foul. They say they want to get pplbhealthy? They don't feed ppl salty food entirely from cans. The constant meetings and asking god to forgive us BC we are all so horrible...met a girl who ibdated for a little til she got deported lol. Plus the point made in the article about no free time is totally true. As soon as I got to both places they were giving me seroquel and shit and expecting me to wake up all early and shit. I basically said fuck you I'm sleeping. When I went on suboxone I made more progress in a week than I did at all three treatment centers combined.

all the rehabs and detoxes i've been to had some assholes on staff (there were good staff though) and most only offered 12 step shit (which i never have, and probably never will vibe with.)

I basically said fuck you I'm sleeping.

LOL!!! Picturing you saying that to them made me spit out my Mountain Dew through my nostrils =D

They're not all terrible and abusive, but the majority are. The worst part for me is the greed that motivates the people who operate these places. Many of them are primarily staffed by low paid workers with no credentials, the food is average, and you're made to share a room with other clients. Where is the money going? 800-1500 dollars a day?! Really?! I've had very decent apartments that didn't cost that much a month! It's robbery!

It is robbery, isn't it?

They stand to lose a lot if the war on drugs ends. And I've seen and heard about them fighting tooth and nail to reverse the legalization of Cannabis Sativa in Colorado and Washington. God I wish I would have saved the YouTube video I saw regarding this, but if I find it, I'll be sure to link it.

Methadone Clinics also make a huge profit from the drug war. Even in nations which have government funded healthcare, the MMT clinics there can rake in a large amount of cash by simply charging extra for the methadone itself, as is done where I presently reside. The methadone here is overpriced big time in my opinion. Also, there is no "feetox" which means that if you can't afford to pay for your dose, you don't get any - no exceptions. The doctors don't give a damn if you stand to go into withdrawal.

It's incredibly sad to witness patients crying in the corner because they can't afford their dose. It really bothers the shit out of me to see that, but if I speak up about it, according to their policies, I can get myself into a lot of shit. Worst case scenario, they kick me out of the program for good. And if I do try to follow standard procedure and contact their head office if I have any complaints, no one ever answers the phone, and the mailbox is always somehow full, meaning that I can't even leave a message. Coincidence that for about 5 years now, the mailbox is full every time I call?

Haha. I'm paying them to be there well my insurance was, so I figured if I wanted to sleep then I'd sleep. I didn't participate in group, did the bare minimum...god it was awful. I feel bad saying I wouldn't wish that on anyone BC of my experience, BC I'm sure there are ppl out there that want to get clean but don't have the means...incredibly sad when someone can't afford their dose. I've given a few ppl at the clinic a few bucks here and there when the fucks that run the office said oh you're 5 short we can't help you.
