Not on a train, sadly.
Anyone else tried this very eccentric game? Only History snobs need apply.

The whole concept of this game is very strange. Even from the get-go - the load screen informs you that basically the entire game has been loaded to life before you start!

I am currently playing EU III, although I have tried the newer EU: Rome and am not too happy about that one (mostly because I picked Pergamon and got conquered almost instantly...). So for now, I stick with III.

In this very peculiar game, you can choose any point in history between the 14th and 17th century, at basically any place in the world, and change the course of history through a series of choices. The game is actually in real-time, but a key component is that you are able to speed up time to week per second rate or pause it completely.

Very strange game, and I am still trying to figure out heads and tails. Like many historical sims, it seems to have a lot of cryptic mechancs left to the player to discover.

Although basically any geo-historical entity is available for play, the focus is obviously on Europe. No wonder, then, that when I picked the Khanate of Khiva or Astrakhan I spent a lot of time staring at a map with not much happening. Still, this is the first game ever that I was able to play as historical entities that actually interest me, and that made me very happy. Currently, I seem to be doing very well with Venice.

I still think that the Total War games are much better on average, but this game is very addicting somehow, for some yet unknown reason...

There's a security guard at my school who is big into games like these. He has also described to me a game where you have control over the political decisions and such.

There is a similar version that is set in the Middle East that is close to what you described. It's one of the non-violent games that is growing in popularity among the people over there.
