Long term use of benzodiazepines which is not exactly what Etizolam (a thienodiazepine) is, but it has similar properties. There are no long term studies of the effects of Etizolam. Shooting 20-30mgs is a very large amount of Etizolam.

Here is an article on the long term effects of Benzodiazepines http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-term_effects_of_benzodiazepines

I would certainly be worried for your friend if I were you knowing the doses he were taking daily paired with the limited knowledge on long term effects of the substance.

It also causes physical dependency where if he were to not be able to supply his habit of 20-30mgs per day he would be at risk for life threatening seizures. Lets hope he tapers or sees a doctor for an actual diagnosis and prescription before Etizolam is no longer available.

Etizolam dependence at 1mg when stopped abruptly can most certainly cause seizures so I can imagine 20-30 would need severe medical intervention.

Benzodiazepines are not a drug to toy around with without a prescription due to their dependency and withdrawal. Etizolam more so since it is not even a prescribed medication and can disappear at anytime.

Your friend should seek help and begin tapering immediately.

That's an extremely high dose of etizolam. And IVing it as well.

Your friend (*is it you you're talking about here?) needs to seek professional help. Coming off that extreme of a dosage without medical supervision is very dangerous.

i don't see the point in IVing etizolam but long term side effects: you may grow man titties, you will become dependent, possibly addicted as well, cognitive deficits are still debated but etizolam in general seems less prone to mental fog than traditional benzodiazepines.

Other than that we have the eye twitching issue and basically the same long term effects that benzos have. In terms of brain damage or cognitive impairment, well i think the jury is still out on whether benzos themselves cause either, especially permanently. I think it's safe to say your memory will be messed up while on benzos/etizolam and your ability to form new memories will be impacted but if you're only taking therapeutic doses this isn't an issue. If you are abusing etizolam then it's a sure thing but upon cessation of etizolam, your memory should go back to normal.

Go through the research and make a decision, last time i checked there were solid arguments on both sides that benzos would cause/not cause damage. Etizolam is a bit easier on the body IME (and i've had a fair amount) but that doesn't speak to its possible dangers in the long term. I'm sure places where it is legal have had long term studies done that you can look at.

quick data point here, i've been taking 2 mg/day of etizolam for probably around nine months now, in divided 0.5 or 0.25 mg doses throughout the day. so we're talking more therapeutic dose than outright abuse like 20-30 mg/day IV but i've experienced no side effects whatsoever beyond a mild dependence.

if this is you or your friend the best thing to do is immediately start to taper and discontinue IV administration. this will only lead to escalation of dose and quite literal lethal withdrawl, and if he is fucked up as you say he may become to dysfunctional to get the funds or get more leading to abrupt withdrawl .... this sounds like something a medical professional might have to help this person with despite spot on tapering, benzo withdrawl with short acting compounds at high doses is really tricky, as in not seizing or becoming mentally screwed
