From the wiki article about GHB:

In New Zealand and Australia, GHB, 1,4-B and GBL are all Class B illegal drugs, along with any possible esters, ethers and aldehydes.

As far as I know in most other countries that have no "controlled substances analog act"-like laws only the salts of illegal drugs are illegal as well.

I'm wondering about the metabolism and pharmacology of GHB esters. Espacally about the ethanol ester.

Could anyone please tell me some details about GHB esters?

There are info's about ester derivatives on Rhodium's Archieve on the topic "GHB (Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate) Synthesis FAQ". Please do check!

How about a dimeric ester?

I'm sure it would bypass legislation in lots of places...

many countries control esters and ethers of listed drugs.
also any hydrolysis of the ester and you are legally in the merde.

A little off topic but a long time ago I bioassayed 4-methyl-GHB (from hydrolysis of gamma-valerolactone) as first reported by Rhodium and had almost the identical experience to him. Muscle relaxation at first which gradually turned into a very genuine sleepiness and good mood. I ended up having an hour long nap which was very refreshing. Not as much of a "drunken euphoria" as with GHB but an interesting compound. I don't think this compound is controlled, though I could be wrong about that.
