Innocent
It looks so blameless… Sitting there on the shelf
An official prescription label obscuring the name
But I know what it is, I know only too well
Escape
I open the bottle, willingly, caressingly.
Tablets spill into my hand, white, pure, promising.
I caress the little bars, counting slowly what remains.
Twelve...
I glance at the date on the bottle,
Take note of the day my script was filled.
That long ago… I calculate the number of days, or perhaps that short.
One
Placed on the desk in front of me, the rest replaced carefully
I hold the last in my hand for a moment, recap gently with love
Then put the bottle where it belongs.
Oblivion
Promised by each bar, apathy to mask the fear and pain
A crutch to lean upon, a face to hide behind
I take one and bring it to my lips, almost instant calm to a troubled soul
Numb
It’s all so easy, now problems seem so small
Irrelevant, tiresome, trivial
Instant dismissal where once would have been feeling
Choices
Tomorrow a time for decision; the bottle will call once more
The time will come for action, choice when faced with reality or escape
Perhaps it is addiction, for tonight the tablets reign
