Energy/Meal Bars

^ Perhaps it doesn't bother you, but maybe it bothers other people to not know exactly what the source of those ingredients are.

firefighter, try a bag of nuts and dried goji berries. if you haven't planned ahead then i would stick with water. i know that sometimes the hunger wins and you just want to eat something. in that case i suppose cliff bars aren't terrible.

In the past I've made bags of mixed nuts and dried fruits to take with me. That is good. I think I'm going to make an effort this weekend to put together a bunch of healthy grabbable snacks that I can quickly get to when I'm rushing before/after work or going on a hike or a longer journey. I think the convenience is what's most important to me as well as the nutrition factor.

Larabars, I believe, contain healthy, natural ingredients. They aren't as big as a Clif Bar, so I don't feel like they necessarily fill me up, but for a quick burst of energy or to hold me over if I'm starving I think they work really well. They're good on hikes or to just have a few in the backpack for emergency food purposes.

An example of the Larabar ingredients: Banana Bread This is my favorite flavor of Larabar. It's soooooo tasty. While Larabars are more expensive generally than Clif Bars, I only buy them when they're on sale for $1 or less per bar. This is still pretty expensive for the amount that you're getting.

I'll likely post back later this weekend about making my own 'power bars' at home. I am giving myself lots of chill time this weekend after a busy stressful week so I think some cooking is in order.

Stuff'n'junk

I'm not in the frame of mind to debate or try and convince you of anything...if they work for you and you're happy, then that's all that matters.

All the best.

firefighter, you going to make the Whey Protein oat bar things? Or just shove a bunch of ingredients and hope for the best?

Chill time sounds good... Have a great weekend

I was typing while someone moved it so now I have to type it all over again!
They're just a quick and tasty source of protein, and definitely better than candy for fitness.
I have made my own bars in the past and they tasted just like the ones from the shop, but were much cheaper. All you need is milk, oatmeal, whey and peanut butter.
I don't really like them, but it all comes down to personal preference. If you like them, you can use them as a source of protein. I wouldn't rely on them for all my protein though.

Well its funny that I started this thread because now I literally never eat these things anymore. I think they're too constipating and not very nutritious. I think its better to keep some fruit and nuts in your pack for emergency situations. Maybe a chocolate bar. The Larabars are probably the best bet as they are usually just dates, nuts, and some dried fruit. But I'd rather have fresh food if I can :)

^It is actually Interchangeable, I would either eat a fruit or a bar depending on what I feel. Ime its not that bad if most of the food you eat are high in fiber such as oatmeal etc. I eat oatmeal everyday plus fruits veggies and lean meat so I don't experience constipation at all.

Larabars are the best but I stopped eating them as soon as I saw the carbs and sugar content. Carbs in some shit like that are essentially sugar. And that's why they're so sweet. Don't miss em at all.

These items are essentially health when taken in situations where you are burning significant amounts of calories. For better taste and health, you could try making your own. This will help you avoid the highly processed ingredients that are typical of them. Alton Brown's "Good Eats" (season 9, episode 6) gives a pretty good rundown involving multiple recipes.
