It's a great idea. It won't happen anytime soon though. I'm also not one of those people who thinks everything should be legal. I believe opiates should still be controlled. Methamphetamine should definitely be controlled. Coke should probably remain controlled too. Jail is not the answer, that is one thing I firmly agree on. Jail isn't even the answer for many people who sell. Sure, the gangsters who has amassed millions of dollars from selling heroin... yes they should go to jail when caught. The guy on the corner selling as many bags of H as he can so he can fuel his own habit that he struggles with everyday.... Jail will not help someone like that.
With the law, we try to draw these perfect black and white lines. We want everyone to know legally, exactly what the consequences are for their actions. All to often there are no black and white lines in the drug world. Is someone really a criminal for supplying an illegal substance, when all parties involved are more than willing adults who if they weren't getting their heroin from Joe the addict who sells to support his habit, then they would be getting it from Bob the addict down the road. We want to say "reason has nothing to do with it, you broke the law". Reason has everything to do with it though. Selling heroin because you are addicted and trying to support your habit is no different than committing a crime because you are mentally ill. We can't prosecute the sick for murder here in the states if the sickness caused the murder. We can prosecute the sick here in the states for selling drugs, even if the sickness contributed to selling the drugs. More than anything we need to reverse the whole uneducated nasty attitude that people here have toward drug users. There are people that act like someone willingly wants to be homeless and smoke crack all day. I don't know of anyone who has woke up and decided, even just a little bit, they want to suck wee-wee for crack. CNN did a report the other day that said drug abuse costs the government as much as any of the major diseases. If we compare the costs to diseses, why are we spending the money on prisons to house these people 24/7. They could be out on the streets and possibly even working and paying taxes. Sure they won't be working for NASA, but paying taxes period is better than sitting in jail and wasting tax money. The Nixon era war on drugs people are the worlds worst about making uneducated decisions on how to deal with drug abusers. The government needs to stop making it look like everyone who does drugs is a Colombian coke dealer who only cares about money. We as a nation need to approach this problem with a more earnest and heartfelt endeavor to help our fellow countrymen who are hurting so bad every day. There is NOTHING fun about what they are going through.
