Elon Musk officially buys Twitter, DONE DEAL !

Wouldn’t a monthly fee reduce the amount of bots/trolls ? I mean I doubt someone is gonna pay 8$ A pop for a thousand bot accounts, I don’t use Twitter but it might actually reduce bots by a good bit, but then again I guess they could just have people do one of those choose the pictures that have a school bud in them things

People pay a lot for fake likes and follows and that requires a lot of bot accounts. So the incentive is still very much there.

Like everything else in this boring corporate dystopia, nothing will actually improve. We'll be presented with the illusion that it has and some statistics to 'prove' it e.g. "we removed ~10,000 bot accounts". Meanwhile the bots that are left are the ones from organisations that can either afford it or have the ability to orchestrate it
regardless i.e GCHQ, NSA, etc.

You'll get rid of some edgy Russian teenagers, which are the ones that the media claims are the troll factories, and maybe some domestic edgelords too. Meanwhile the state sponsored operations will continue and the average person will now believe everything is kosher, not realising that they're still being manipulated.

So actually the situation will get worse. There will be less bots, but the manipulation will still be there and more obscure to the average person.

Increase taxation or raise the cost to create a higher barrier for entry to the average person. Hmmm. Sounds awfully similar to: green taxes, electric vehicles/legislating against combustion vehicles, and the rest of the seemingly unconnected but similar solutions being presented to us for a variety of issues..

For a 'tech genius' like Elon it is a joke of a solution. One might suspect it's also planting another seed for the whole 'digital ID' narrative, where we need verification just to use the internet and anonymity is dispensed with altogether.. for safety, security, and the children. Who wants to bet that within 6 months we'll see another major tech platform implementing a similar feature. There's been a coordinated media campaign over the past year, in the UK at least, regarding 'misinformation', the harms related to trolling (causing child suicide), etc.

The fee is optional, you get the features if you pay for them. If you pay your tweets get higher visibility on people's timelines.
A verified bot or troll is easier to detect since there are way less of them. I guess this is what they're banking on. But unverified bots just continue as is.
People wo are posting politically motivated trolling stuff are pretty highly motivated to spread their message. And I mean, super-PACs are already spending hundreds of millions of dollars on Republican political ads. And you know they're making heavy use of twitter and other social media, too. What's $8 a month to these people?
That's irrelevant here because it'd be the same as before, it's all about followers too, if you have followers and you aren't breaking the rules then go ahead. Still gotta get people to follow you.

But apart from less visible bots, I don't see the problem they're actually solving. How will this lead to more advertising income? Legit question. Nobody actually thinks they're gonna make up for billions with subscriptions and other new features they're gonna try to roll out fast, right? Not looking forward to the algorithm overhaul where I see Twitter payers majorly prioritized either.

I'm under the impression that subscriptions will be optional. If they won't be (to like/retweet/reply, whatever), that would be gynormously stupid and would effectively kill Twitter (they won't get even 5% to pay). They'd never do that.

Well Kathy Griffin got suspended so Twitter is already better

She didn't get suspended for opinions or views or sharing information which I would disagree with even tho I don't like her, she got suspended for impersonating Elon Musk lmao

I've never once had an account thus never even been able to look at the hellscape.

It's funny to see right ringers glorifying a guy that pays for abortions for his employees, smokes weed, is an adulterer with 4? Baby mamas, and is an athiest agnostic...when you point these three traits of Musk out to them they don't beleieve you and then you cite sources and they just ignore you.

Reminds me of a other life long left leaning "billionaire", athiest, and sexual deviant... that decided to parrot a few bait lines like "free.speech" and "God" and instantly was worshipped by these christian r worded people. They are so fucking dumb and easily controlled its sad to see people.wirh so much money and little morals dupe them into a frenzy and rip apart America for more money when they are already billionaires.

You like Twitter, right Elecrum.
What do you think about the upcoming algorithm changes? Like I don't think regular people suffer from bots really. Why would I want the 30% of my follows that will pay for Twitter be heavily prioritized? Sounds disastrous to me, and that's in all objectivity. And if you don't force the algorithm changes, there is hardly any point. Unless a large majority subscribes it might actually kill Twitter.

don't care what he does in his personal life as long as he damages the monopoly on the control of information on the internet that journalists, politicians and governments think they deserve to have

He's got a point, but he should make up his mind. Let everyone say everything and hardly do any moderation and be thé most accurate source of information and fire almost the whole moderation team ;)

I mostly use Twitter to find information not largely reported, politics, economic, foreign stuff like the Brazil riots right now, sports, covid stuff etc. I don't even post on Twitter and can't trade the stock now, so I guess I don't really care much about it's revenue or verification practices, or bots and so on, as long as information doesn't get heavily censored like it has been is all that I really want

Did you see the two guys that trolled the media by acting like employees that just got fired? That was pretty funny. The one guy was like "I have to go, I need to touch base with my husband and wife"

Yeah, that's what happens when millions are trying to dunk on Elon with every chance they get, I don't mind. All in all, the ramifications of getting fired from Twitter were overblown I think. I mean, they were definitely well paid and they should have zero problems finding a new job. There are already reports they want to re-hire a ton of them, never really made sense to fire so many in like a week anyway.

"Twitter has had a massive drop in revenue, due to activist groups pressuring advertisers, even though nothing has changed with content moderation and we did everything we could to appease the activists. Extremely messed up! They’re trying to destroy free speech in America."

- Elon Musk

So let me get this straight, one of the wealthiest men on planet earth is getting undone in his noble quest to reinvigorate free speech by a bunch of blue-haired libtard activists?

Use that big genius brain of yours and that unlimited bankroll, what the hells the matter with you? You think that all the people who revel in the thought of screaming the n word into cyberspace want some pussy who's gonna pass the buck like that (while insisting that "nothing has changed with content moderation"), c'mon...

Hilarious seeing journalists flee Twitter for Mastodon and then complaining about offensive content there when they're journalists that should know how to do due diligence but didn't, and are offended by content on a platform that uses decentralized servers that all have their own rules for each server

I had never heard of this ("Mastodon") before yesterday, seems kind of interesting

It's laughable that you think social media is more of a tool for getting real news out than fake news.

Social media is exactly how ppl ended up believing in shit like q anon, flat earth etc. Etc.

Not saying mainstream news isn't biased...they are. They selectively report certain things and ignore others...but they don't flat out lie making false stories.

Social media, especially unmoderated, gives any idiot the ability to spread the wildest lies to gullible uneducated or elderly ppl and have masses of them beleieve it

Take a look at totally unmoderated 4chan (or its grandchild) and tell me if that's a place to get good news about reality.

I think the closest we can get to reality is taking the most reputable right wing news (fox) and most reputable left wing (CNN msnbc etc.) And reading both and coming to our own conclusions. People that only consume one side are living half of reality.

Unfortunately there isn't much better "truth" to be had....but social media being it? Cmon man.

No, I think it should be up to the individual to decide what to believe and what is true/false fake/real and not governments or groups of people with idealogical motives that are given the power to censor information and decide for the individual

but they don't flat out lie making false stories
Yes they do, especially with politics. They push all kinds of dirt provided by "anonymous sources" that turns out to be completely false

I've heard impersonating a Chelsea Pensioner will get you from 30 to life now under Elon's latest reforms. Could provoke some controversy.

1) Think about how r worded the average individual is (I'm conflicted a bit because I bekeieve in total freedom in all things but at the same time people are so dumb they need to be controlled) i don't know the answer

2) social media isn't some layed out source of information you can freely choose from, it's based on addictive algorithms designed to anger and trigger people, this is how profit is maximized. So what the viewer gets from social media isn't pure...it's the outrage algorithm

Network news uses the outrage bait too but if you view many different sources and come to a rational conclusion from opposing views it's the closest we can get I think to reality based news.

Why aren't all the conservatives crying about random Twitter accounts being suspended for no reason other than mocking Elon Musk? I thought he said comedy was now legal on Twitter?

I thought he bought it to promote free speech?

Hmm...

On a side note I think Kathy Griffin is horrendous (I saw her perform live in San Francisco with some gay friends of mine), but Elon literally banned her because he doesn't like her, and that's the opposite of free speech.

Conservatives only care about free speech when it applies to them. I predicted all of this many months ago when Musk initially tried to buy Twitter. They should be standing up for these banned accounts, but they don't... because they're liberals. Oh the irony.

"I should be able to say whatever I want, but I don't care if others cannot."
